The full moon known as the harvest moon, as it traditionally gave farmers more time to harvest their summer-grown crops into the night, will make its appearance Monday night soon after sunset. Appearing two days before the autumnal equinox this year, the full moon can first be seen at 7:55 p.m. ET, 17 minutes after sunset, according to NASA.

In November 2016, the singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, renowned for his plaintive ballads, died a few months after the woman who inspired many of them, his Norwegian lover and muse, Marianne Ihlen. Theirs had been a large and chaotic romance that was in many respects a product of the particular times (the 1960s) and the specific place (the Greek island of Hydra) in which they met. The relationship’s legacy was a catalogue of classic songs – So Long Marianne, Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye, Bird on the Wire – a great deal of heartache, but also a lasting sense of the creative power of love. Did you know this song is about The Verve's Richard Ashcroft? Well, now you do. Oasis songwriter and guitarist Noel Gallagher told Select magazine how he felt about Ashcroft: “He always seemed to me to not be very happy about what was going on around him, almost trying too hard. I always felt he was born in the wrong place, and he was always trying to say the right things, but they came out wrong.” www.radiox.co.uk Oh, by the way, happy 49th to oasis singer Liam #$%^&*! The Wrens’ Kevin Whelan is releasing a new album this fall: Observatory, under the new moniker Aeon Station, in December via Sub Pop. Whelan recorded the album in Union City, New Jersey with his brother and Wrens guitarist Greg Whelan, the Wrens’ drummer Jerry MacDonald, and Tom Beaujour. The album also has backup vocals from Whelan’s wife Mary Ann. In an interview with The New York Times, Whelan revealed that Observatory includes five newly remixed songs that he originally wrote for the Wrens’ long-teased follow-up to 2003’s The Meadowlands. In a press release for Observatory, Whelan said, “It’s the best I’ve done and may ever do frankly. It’s written over such a long period of my life. Music I did in the past was tinged with expectations or presumptions, but this time, it was just for me.” www.nytimes.com

Here’s what the band's Rosa Walton had to say about it: "I wanted to use the setting of a fairground at night to describe the dizziness, intensity, and excitement of being with a woman I had strong feelings for, and the hall of mirrors as a metaphor for discovering and exploring parts of myself that I was bringing to life. In some ways it’s reflective and almost secretive, journeying through confusing and difficult emotions, but I also wanted “Hall of Mirrors” to be a euphoric song that conveys clarity, confidence, and ultimately joy."

Richard H. Kirk, founder and sole full-time member of industrial pioneers Cabaret Voltaire, has died. He was 66. Mute Records wrote: “Richard was a towering creative genius who led a singular and driven path throughout his life and musical career. We will miss him so much.” In 1973, Kirk formed Cabaret Voltaire in Sheffield, UK, with Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson...with Watson remaining in the group until 1981 and Mallinder departing in 1994. One of the early Industrial/post-punk groups, they released groundbreaking albums albums such as 1981’s legendary Red Mecca and 1987’s Code. Over time, the group’s sound evolved toward dance-punk with 1982’s 2×45 and later forays into electronic dance music, with club hits like 1984’s “Sensoria.” In addition to his work with Cabaret Voltaire, Kirk also released a number of other records under a variety of aliases that included Sandoz, Electronic Eye and Trafficante.

"Hey John! Well, today is my 55th birthday and while that just sounds old, I don't feel old and believe a lot of that has to do with my constant listening to great music and going to see live bands as much as I'm able. Thanks to you and KEXP, I'm consistently reminded of the great bands that have been the soundtrack of my life while simultaneously discovering new bands that are being added to my mix tape. One of those bands is Buffalo Tom so would you please play Would Not Be Denied. Not only did I play the crap out of Red Letter Day while in college in the 90's, this song represents my impending move to your beautiful corner of the world. As I've written you previously, my wife Sherri and I have spent almost 3 months in Port Townsend this past year and after multiple bidding attempts, we could not be more excited to be under contract for a place in Port Townsend. Given the challenges we ran into, we were questioning whether this was the right move for us so I'm so happy the universe has decided to bless our desire to be in Washington. And most importantly, this means I get to listen to KEXP over the wavelengths! Your soon to be Washington neighbor :) -Trey"

As frontman Ian Devaney explains: “Wounds Of Love” is a song about getting caught in a mental feedback loop when a relationship ends. It’s an endless inner argument — wanting to move on defiantly, but feeling utterly lost about how to do it when the other person has informed so much about how you see yourself. For every bit of progress there’s just as much retreating, and eventually it seems like this back-and-forth becomes the new root of your identity — still tied to the same person, just without them actually being there.": bit.ly -- You can pre-order "A Way Forward," due out on November 3rd, 2021: nationoflanguage.bandcamp.com

(Credit NPR Music) Sarah Dash, singer and co-founder of Labelle, best known for their 1974 hit "Lady Marmalade," died Monday at the age of 76. Dash's bandmate Patti LaBelle announced her longtime friend's death on social media. "We were just onstage together on Saturday and it was such a powerful and special moment!" LaBelle said on Twitter. "Sarah Dash was an awesomely talented, beautiful and loving soul who blessed my life and the lives of so many others in more ways than I can say. And I could always count on her to have my back! That's who Sarah was ... a loyal friend and a voice for those who didn't have one." Nona Hendryx rounded out the Labelle trio. Hendryx shared on Instagram of the passing of her former bandmate, "Words are inadequate so I will use few. We spoke a musical language, music says it best. Singing brought us together..." She added that the two had just talked and texted on Saturday. "Now you're gone, I can't believe it," Hendryx said. Labelle started out as the conventional girl group called Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles and changed into an Afro-futuristic glam rock group (even changing the name to Labelle to complete the transformation) in 1971, embracing a futuristic look — complete with spacesuits and feathers. After the group disbanded in 1976, Dash continued performing as a solo singer, releasing several albums over the years. She became well-established as a session singer, recording and performing with Keith Richards and the Rolling Stones. In 1988, Dash was asked to add her backing vocals to the Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels album, which eventually led to a tour with her old friend Keith Richards. They became close when Dash was still performing with Patti Labelle and The Blue Belles, who opened for Stones in the early 1960s. She recorded the duet "Make No Mistake" with him, and she took the lead vocal on "Time Is on My Side", showcasing her powerful delivery and vocal range, which, Keith has said in his autobiography, is 'the best version of that song he's ever heard'.
