Love this YOLA interview from NPR.... ARI SHAPIRO, HOST: When the artist Yola was a bump in her mother's belly, she was already bopping to disco. YOLA: My mother used to DJ disco music. SHAPIRO: Your mother was a disco DJ. YOLA: Yeah, but in a mental institution. SHAPIRO: Oh, my goodness. That sounds like a story. YOLA: Yeah, it is. She was a SEN registered nurse, and, like, they had, like, hospital radio. And they played records. And she goes, I've got loads of records. I'll play. And so then she starts, like, deejaying. And it just - it chills everyone out. www.npr.org

SAULT dwells on gang activity across NINE, painting a complex portrait of their world: “It’s a fight for life / No one’s doing it right,” opens “London Gangs,” the album’s second track. Likewise, singer Cleo Sol isn’t passing judgment on “Bitter Streets,” a play on the word “bittersweet”; instead, there’s a tinge of worry in her voice as she describes the friend going missing or maybe losing touch with her. For Scott in NC shouting out Carol and Bob in Ballard. -- "I wanted to write a song that presented a resigned, even joyful look at doom," recalls David Byrne in the liner notes of Once in a Lifetime: The Best of Talking Heads. "At our deaths and at the apocalypse… (always looming, folks). I think it succeeded.

For our pal Sachi in Japan. -- Bridwell told The NME April 24, 2010 that this song was inspired by his feelings of paranoia. "I suffer from paranoia really badly," he said." And the thing that inspires me most is, once I get into that horrible isolated area, I think I'm being watched." He added: "I've written songs that are based specifically on that feeling. 'Is There A Ghost' was based on an ice-maker in my house that was freaking me out." == To be fair, the ice-maker was the gloomiest, most deathiest, evil doer of ice-makers, ever.

Loma’s Dan Duszynski says of the song, “Songs are like cats—sometimes they just pick you. Emily and I first heard "Going Out" while we were playing at a record store in Austin a few years ago. I went to the counter to ask who it was, and the album (Dinner’s Three EPs) is still in rotation at our home/studio. We couldn't resist making our own version because it always cheers us up. Cranberries guitarist Noel Hogan wrote the music for this song before Dolores O'Riordan joined the band. When O'Riordan auditioned for the band, she wrote her own set of lyrics. Dolores O'Riordan described this as "a love song." In the lyric, she describes being mistreated by her love and seeing him with another girl, yet unable to break free because he lets their relationship linger. - bit.ly

My friend John (known to all as "LTJ") died yesterday way too young. He loved the Church. It would be great to hear "Under the Milky Way." LTJ was for "Long Tall John" because he stood at least 6'4". A sweet dude who gave big hugs, he was a gentle giant. He played the guitar and loved bands with loud, crunchy guitars, like Dinosaur Jr and Built to Spill. He simply loved music and we went to several shows together, like Mark Lanegan at the Neptune and Drive By Truckers at the Showbox. The Church might've been his favorite band. I found a funny facebook post from him in which he wrote "I made out with at least 11 people during Under the Milky Way.” The post is indicative of how LTJ would share the music he knew you'd like with you. For Jerilyn in Richmond, Virginia === Kristen adds.... Life's funny. It's a bitch and unexpected and beautiful. Hug the people that matter to you OFTEN. Give grace to the stranger that's having a bad day. Be kind to the grumpy old person because they probably feel forgotten and alone. We all struggle and we all want to be seen. Music is my life force. Art and nature my purpose and connection my greatest need. Thank you KEXP for providing the soundtrack to the roller coaster of life.

Bragg stated, “To me, ‘I Will Be Your Shield’ is the heart and soul of the album. I’ve come to the conclusion that empathy is the currency of music — that our job as songwriters is to help people come to terms with their feelings by offering them examples of how others may have dealt with a situation similar to that in which listeners find themselves. After what we’ve all been through, the idea of being a shield, physically, emotionally, psychologically, really resonates." - bit.ly

Hey John, I know that an extra hour is more work for you, but it is nice to have another hour of you on the radio. I may have told this story before, but in 2008, someone in California reached out to me on FB- "you listen to KEXP? you like (a poet we both read)? we should be friends!" And so it was. I'm in New Jersey, and we've exchanged mixes and albums and suggestions over the years. We first met in 2010 when I visited San Francisco, and again in 2016 at a family wedding. In 2018, he came to MY wedding. He visited Seattle for the first time this past weekend, stopping at your bar and other places familiar to us from listening. He texted last night that he stopped by the studio and that no music was playing and it was so empty, but it made him happy to see it. My favorite memory is driving around with my friend in SF when Thoughts of Rena came on. I said how much I loved that song, and he said "YOU KNOW IT?" I mean, of course. We listen to your show! So if you have time today, can you fit it on for my friend Steven, from his friend Jayme? Hope you're doing alright. This is a very heavy week. Jayme, NJ
