This song is about a magical, albeit lonely character called Kiko, who comes out at night to "dance and dance." In SongFacts interview, Los Lobos' drummer and songwriter, Louie Pérez, told us he reflected upon his childhood when writing the lyrics: "I took this remembrance of the little house that I grew up in and Mom's dresser-top altar, and was able to fold that into a song." Pitchfork: I love how this song captures the awkward physicality of being a teenager. What were you like in those years? Lucy: I was pretty obedient, and I loved God a lot. I was always trying to get to the deepest depth of everything. I would challenge strangers to staring contests and blow bubbles in the hallway of my high school. It was, like, quirky girl shit. That said, I was dissociating a lot. I would randomly fall asleep when I was stressed out. One time, I just shut down completely and took a nap on the sidewalk, in the sun. I had enough drama that I learned things and had enough nice things—and enough hurtful things—that I’ve become someone I mostly understand. I don’t think I could have said that a couple of years ago. pitchfork.com

Frontman Bardo Martinez says “The hardness of the track lended itself to a more ominous meaning,” he adds. “The lyrics are multidimensional, in America there are so many layers of trauma that we all have to deal with that seep into our everyday behavior and attitudes towards each other. Genocide and slavery is embedded within the dna of American culture and the social strife gripping America today exemplifies this. ‘Dark Star’ is about an honest feeling that seeks to break the status quo, tear down the physical and mental walls that hold us back from simply being ourselves.”

Chad in Edmonds requested. -- On their second studio album, Public Enemy set out to make the hip hop equivalent of Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On,’ in regards to the social commentary. This tracks faster tempo and frantic horn samples from J.B.'s' "The Grunt" are to heighten the tension of the mix, while Chuck D's lyrics are a message of, "one of total resistance that was readily accessible through the confrontational sounds of bass, groove, and noise."

"Everybody Knows" features in the 1990 film Pump Up the Volume as protagonist Mark Hunter (Christian Slater, as the operator of an FM pirate radio station) plays it several times during his clandestine broadcasts. A cover by Concrete Blonde is used at the film's end, and it is this cover version that made it onto the film's soundtrack album rather than Cohen's version. Cohen's original version was also featured prominently in Atom Egoyan's 1994 film Exotica, as the theme music of exotic dancer Christina when she performs at the club of the film's title....because that makes sense.

You know who kicks butt? CHERYL WATERS, THAT'S WHO! AND SHE IS UP NEXT. WOOOOOOOOO!!!! #science -- The Lounge Society's single "Cain’s Heresy" shakes with the propulsion of a nimble rhythm section, full of bite and scorn, simultaneously swinging angrily at a negligent political class ("The death of four souls is less than a kick in the teeth, for them"), the threat of misinformation ("Poisonous ideals on the screen breed a vicious way of thinking, off the screen") and the noxious follow-the-leader march of celebrity culture ("They’re servants to fame"). The EP title 'Silk For The Starving' in itself probes at a society that routinely neglects the needs of the have-nots. bit.ly
