Pitchfork: I love how this song captures the awkward physicality of being a teenager. What were you like in those years?
Lucy: I was pretty obedient, and I loved God a lot. I was always trying to get to the deepest depth of everything. I would challenge strangers to staring contests and blow bubbles in the hallway of my high school. It was, like, quirky girl shit. That said, I was dissociating a lot. I would randomly fall asleep when I was stressed out. One time, I just shut down completely and took a nap on the sidewalk, in the sun. I had enough drama that I learned things and had enough nice things—and enough hurtful things—that I’ve become someone I mostly understand. I don’t think I could have said that a couple of years ago.

Electric Avenue is a real street located in London, one of the first to be lit by electric lights, and also the place of the Brixton Uprising in 1981.

On their second studio album, Public Enemy set out to make the hip hop equivalent of Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On,’ in regards to the social commentary. This tracks faster tempo and frantic horn samples from J.B.'s' "The Grunt" are to heighten the tension of the mix, while Chuck D's lyrics are a message of, "one of total resistance that was readily accessible through the confrontational sounds of bass, groove, and noise."

The single was released six times, the first in January 1980 on Axis with the catalogue number AXIS 3. When Axis realized that there was another company claiming that name, it changed the label's name to 4AD. The single was reissued in February 1980 on Beggars Banquet (BEG 37) and later in several editions on 4AD (BEG 37 and AD 3).
The latest release from this Miami-bred, Turin-based artist is a surprise six-song EP that sounds like a continuation of their last album (2020’s excellent Heaven to a Tortured Mind), with a densely textured sound blending moody psych-rock, driving post-punk and futuristic glam.

"Everybody Knows" features in the 1990 film Pump Up the Volume as protagonist Mark Hunter (Christian Slater, as the operator of an FM pirate radio station) plays it several times during his clandestine broadcasts. A cover by Concrete Blonde is used at the film's end, and it is this cover version that made it onto the film's soundtrack album rather than Cohen's version.
Cohen's original version was also featured prominently in Atom Egoyan's 1994 film Exotica, as the theme music of exotic dancer Christina when she performs at the club of the film's title....because that makes sense.
