Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (also known as The Bad Boys of Jazz) is an eight-piece, Chicago-based brass ensemble consisting of eight sons of the jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran. Their musical style ranges from hip-hop to jazz to funk and rock, including calypso and gypsy music. They call their eclectic blend of sound "now music", or "Hypnotic". Reared in the teachings of music since they were children, they grew up on the stage playing as the "Phil Cohran Youth Ensemble". Here's an interview: vocalo.org

"Cloudbusting" is about the very close relationship between psychologist and philosopher Wilhelm Reich and his young son, Peter, told from the point of view of the mature Peter. It describes the boy's memories of his life with Reich on their family farm, called Orgonon where the two spent time "cloudbusting", a rain-making process which involved using a machine designed and built by Reich - a machine called a cloudbuster - to point at the sky. The song was inspired by Peter Reich's 1973 memoir, 'A Book of Dreams'.

Massachusetts singer-songwriter Ella Williams, a.k.a. Squirrel Flower, will release a new album called Planet (i) this summer. Williams explained that she wrote the lyrics in character: “‘Hurt a Fly’ is me embodying a persona of gaslighting, narcissistic soft-boy type (stuff). The classic, ‘Sorry I acted violently, I’m not mad that you got upset at me, wanna hang out next week?’ I wanted to see what it was like to be a character trying to skirt around accountability. It’s an angry and unhinged song.”

Any TV on the radio. Thanks, Michelle from hopefully rainy priest lake! -- Scott writes: Thank you for playing this TV on the Radio right now. It gave me a happy memory and laugh recalling when Stephen Colbert had the band on the Colbert Report years ago. Released on this day in 1993...looks at notes...eyes bug out...29-years ago. Whoa. Man, I need a hit from...umm...a...bong. -- My big sister Jess used to drive us around in her Jeep Cherokee (with a beer tap as the shifter) we listened to lots of Cyprus Hill and Hammerbox; we smoked lots of terrible BOGO packs of cigarettes. I was still in middle school in Crown Hill, she and my other sister Annastasia went to Ballard High School. My mom had just died of cancer in 1993 and although my sisters and I could really argue we were as thick as thieves! I never would have imagined hearing Hits from the Bong by Cyprus Hill 20+ years later would invoke such good memories. Thanks John! PS If you could convinced Hammerbox to reunite for a performance that would be SO COOL!! Lol you’ve got pull right? -- Vanessa -- Everytime I hear Cypress Hill I think of Pearl Jams - Drop in the park: Seaweed Lazy Susan Cypress Hill Pearl Jam What a show! Thanks - Darren in Issaquah

Champion says, “‘Love Nobody’ is about the fear of falling so hard for someone when you know it’s destined to crash and burn. Those crushes where it feels like your heart is cannibalizing your brain. We’ve all been there when you look into someone’s eyes and know they will destroy you, and yet, nothing can pull you away. You are all in. You hate it and have never wanted anything more.” jennchampion.bandcamp.com

There is debate over the subject of the inspiration for this song. One claim says that an argument between Michael Hausman and bandmate/former girlfriend Aimee Mann inspired the song's lyrics, but producer Mike Thorne disputes this and states the lyrics originally had Mann singing to another woman and that the gender was changed due to pressure from Epic Records. In his 2013 autobiography, Ministry: The Lost Gospels According to Al Jourgensen, Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen made the claim that the song is based on a brief relationship he had with Mann while living in Boston. bit.ly

Speaking about this new single, Torres' Mackenzie Scott explained, "The title emerged from a dream I had. The song’s theme is that truth is eternal, and it’s also about never stopping. "To bring it back down to earth, the song’s also about being ready to drop everything to do something essential for someone you love. In this instance, it’s bringing my girlfriend lunch so she can keep painting." bit.ly -- See the "prehistoric" video: www.youtube.com

From Rolling Stone interview with Guitarist Kim Thayil : What was everyone’s headspace like around the making of Badmotorfinger? There was a definite sense of excitement because we had this new bass player. Everything was working creatively. There was a little bit of hesitation because we’d really built something over five or six years with Hiro, and in between we played with [tour bassist] Jason Everman, but when Ben joined it was exciting. He’s one of my best friend’s little brothers, so I felt responsible for him. So it was excitement and eagerness but also a little trepidation because it was new. Read More Here: www.rollingstone.com
