"Northern Town" started life with a different title. Laird-Clowes told Mojo that he had befriended Paul Simon at one point and the two stayed in touch. He recalled: "I played him the song and he asked, 'What are you going to call it - 'Ah Hey Ma Ma Ma?' I told him that we intended to name it 'Morning Lasted All Day.' 'That's no good,' he said and so I came up with 'Life In A Northern Town.' which he thought was a great title."

A resident of Topanga Canyon for many years, Tim Booth wrote the lyrics of "Beautiful Beaches" in response to climate change migrations and the subsequent increasingly regular Californian fires bringing devastation to his community. It was inspired by a friend who lost his 'fire proof' home and had to flee for his life to the beaches and a recurring vision Tim had last year of earthquakes and fires in California - a vision which resulted in his family packing up and leaving the Canyon. 'That life we left behind, we're racing down to those beautiful beaches'.

"Hustle" is the lead single from the group’s upcoming fourth studio album, Black To The Future, which arrives on May 14th through Impulse Records. Sons of Kemet is the brainchild of Shabaka Hutchings, and the forthcoming record is the band’s first since 2018’s Mercury Prize-nominated Your Queen Is A Reptile. Speaking about the record, saxophonist and bandleader Shabaka Hutchings says: “Black to the Future is a sonic poem for the invocation of power, remembrance and healing. It depicts a movement to redefine and reaffirm what it means to strive for black power.

In a 2009 interview with QTheMusic.com, band member Jez Williams said that the songs came quickly and effortlessly: "I had this little house in Northenden where my makeshift studio was. It took a couple of nights to get the backing track with the top line melody to "There Goes the Fear". Literally the next night I had "Words" coming out of the speakers."

Fever to Tell, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs debut studio album, was released 18 years ago today.
“This is one of the songs we wrote thinking that we would play it live,” lead singer Ellie Rowsell said in a press release. “I miss that feeling of singing on stage. It’s like screaming into a pillow or something — you can get away with being more nasty. There’s a whole other part of me missing.”

Chicago trio FACS have announced their fourth album, which is titled Present Tense and will be out May 21 via Trouble in Mind. Singer Brian Case had this to say about "Strawberry Cough" and it's video featuring album covers:
"Going into record stores and having conversations with strangers, learning about new sounds, and finding something I've been looking for has been sorely missed over the last year. Seeing records spread out all over the house while working on Present Tense made me wonder how these different eras and sounds found their way into our music. I spent a lot of time trying to find the visual / emotional connections between seemingly unrelated works, and walking that back into my subconscious when writing. Sometimes the video is a visualization of the words or music, and sometimes it's just some random themes you notice while refiling your record collection."

Alicia Keys, who was born and raised in Manhattan, had concerns the song would come across as being too "New York." She told Billboard magazine: "We wondered if everyone would be able to understand it. Little did we know EVERYONE would understand it because it's not just about New York, it's about the HOPE that New York represents; the possibility. The chance to follow your dreams no matter who you are or where you come from."
