This is the first track from Kristin Hersh's debut solo studio album, Hips and Makers (1994), and features additional backing vocals from Michael Stipe of R.E.M. It was also featured in the film With Honors that spring, and according to Filmmaker magazine, the music video for the song was directed by Katherine Dieckmann, and is an homage to Maya Deren's groundbreaking 1943 experimental film Meshes of the Afternoon. bit.ly

Lou Barlow has recorded albums with Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr., Folk Implosion, and under his own name. Barlow has this to say of his new album Reason to Live: “People have this vision of me as this heartbroken, depressed guy, but this record feels so true to who I am, to this rich life I now have full of people I love,” he says. “The songs culminated over the last five years to show that music has returned to its central comforting role in my life. Now I’m home.”

The Folk Implosion was an American band founded in the early 1990s by Lou Barlow and John Davis. It was initially a side-project started by Barlow to explore different territory than that being canvassed with his primary band at the time, Sebadoh. The name is a play on the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.

A resident of Topanga Canyon for many years, Tim Booth wrote the lyrics of "Beautiful Beaches" in response to climate change migrations and the subsequent increasingly regular Californian fires bringing devastation to his community. It was inspired by a friend who lost his 'fire proof' home and had to flee for his life to the beaches and a recurring vision Tim had last year of earthquakes and fires in California - a vision which resulted in his family packing up and leaving the Canyon. 'That life we left behind, we're racing down to those beautiful beaches'.

The music video for this track was directed by David Byrne and Sandy McLeod, a filmmaker who worked on Talking Heads' 1984 concert movie Stop Making Sense. In the video, the band is joined by the musicians who played on the track, including Johnny Marr and Kirsty MacColl. As they perform in a studio setting, they are overlayed with design typography enhancing the visuals with various statements, factoids and words from the lyrics. Released on this day, (looks at notes) umm, 10-years ago today. This track finds the trio spitting rhymes about parties on the left and right over brash instrumentation including some cowbell. The whole package is reminiscent of the Beasties' '80s material such as their anthem "Fight For Your Right To Party.

"Kiss" started as an acoustic demo, with melody, lyrics, and basic song structure written by Prince. He gave his demo to the funk band Mazarati for their debut album, and they worked on it with producer David Z. In the end, Prince decided to finish the song, retaining David Z's unique, funky rhythm and background vocal arrangement, along with Mazarati's background vocals; he removed the bass line, and added signature guitar and falsetto vocal elements. The final, minimalist song was a hard sell to Warner Bros., but upon Prince's insistence the song was released and added to Parade.

The Stone Roses self-titled debut was released in 1989 and established the band as one of the fixtures of the Madchester and baggy cultural scenes.
The song is driven by a violin riff played on a synthesizer. According to Simon Rogers, who produced the track, they brought in a musician to replicate it on viola, but it didn't sound right.

Express is the second studio album by English alternative rock band Love and Rockets. It was released on 15 September 1986 on Beggars Banquet Records. An even greater departure from the band members' previous work as Bauhaus, the album's fusion of underground rock with pop stylings can be seen as an early example of alternative rock music, a genre that reached mainstream popularity in the early 1990s.
Daniel Ash became prominent in the late 1970s as the guitarist for the iconic goth rock band Bauhaus, which spawned two related bands led by Ash: Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets. Recently, he reunited with bandmate Kevin Haskins to form Poptone, a retrospective of their respective careers, featuring Kevin's daughter Diva Dompe on bass.
“This is one of the songs we wrote thinking that we would play it live,” lead singer Ellie Rowsell said in a press release. “I miss that feeling of singing on stage. It’s like screaming into a pillow or something — you can get away with being more nasty. There’s a whole other part of me missing.”
