RIP Shock G of Digital Underground who we learned yesterday passed away at the age of 57. Your influence is immeasurable. Thank you. -- Our fav' note about him: Throughout Shock G's rapping career, he created several aliases, resulting in characters that were maintained with such reality, they were believed to be separate people by some music fans, even a few industry insiders. At most public appearances, Jacobs would show up as one person or the other, but at live shows and video shoots he would use a stand-in or camera tricks to maintain the illusion. A fictional biography was constructed for Humpty, the story being that Edward Ellington Humphrey III, former lead singer of "Smooth Eddie and the Humpers," had become a rapper after burning his nose in a kitchen accident with a deep-fryer (the story was even told by Casey Kasem himself on his then countdown show Casey's Top 40).

Dear DJ, Last year I was working as a travel nurse while applying to graduate school for Nurse Anesthesia. One of the requirements for these applications is usually "a letter of recommendation from a doctor whose patients you regularly care for". As a travel nurse, I was never in one place long enough to develop a connection with a Doctor who could write this letter so I didn't know what to do. While living in LA for an assignment I was tuned in to KEXP on the app one morning. I heard a familiar voice of a doctor I had worked with in Maine months earlier talking about how KEXP's music brings people together in a time of social distancing. I couldn't believe my ears! I was reminded of the conversations about new music we'd had when we worked together and it all clicked! I reached out and asked her for the letter of recommendation. Fast forward to today --> I just found out I have been accepted to a very competitive program! Since our connection sort of started through KEXP I was hoping to tell her I got into school through the same channel. If you could play "Sacred" by Blimes and Gab (she introduced me to their music) with the message, "From Luke in New Orleans to Jennifer in Ellsworth - I Got into CRNA school and I couldn't have done it without you! Thank you!". If this doesn't fit in with your current programming I know she always listens to "Early" on weekdays. And thank you, KEXP, for bringing people together. In a way, you have changed my life. Luke

Good morning John and crew! If you are taking requests this morning, my 7 year-old twins Clara and Alex would love to hear something by their favourite band in the entire world, Queen, while they are getting ready for school. Ideally they would like Somebody to Love, but really, anything by Queen will do. Thank you and have a great day! Ron on Vancouver Island

John, I am a social worker who has started commuting by car over the past year and listening to your show on mornings that I go into the office or the jail. I can't say thank you enough for getting me through some of the hardest moments of this past year with your reminder that we're in this together and the music you've played. I've listened to your show on my way to meet clients who will spend the rest of their lives in prison and days when I am driving to jail in Kent to meet the next new client, with the next sad story. I've sat in the car and cried some mornings because of the weight of the pandemic, social work and the heart-wrenching stories we hear day in and day out. That morning this past fall when you played the children's chorus that sang Space Oddity, I sat and cried from the weight of it all, the beauty of their sweet voices reminding me that there is hope. I've never written to KEXP to say thank you, but this morning, after you played QUEEN and got me ready for the next few jail visits I have to do, I wanted to write and say THANK YOU. I don't know how I would have gotten through this past year without you all. Vanessa

'Sticky Fingers' is 50 today! Hi John, happy Friday! 'Sway' is my fave from that landmark disc, if it fits in the mix... -Lou == This song was on the flipside of "Wild Horses" and either I or my sister had the 45 RPM. Anyway, as an 8th grader fixin' to enter high school in 1971, I fell in love with the song and it's still my fave and it's a great "summer song". -Fred

Just got this note from KEXP DJ (and amazing musical artist) Gabriel Teodros. "I was thinking about it for hours yesterday... he made people a part of his group, recorded with them, toured with them, produced songs, and it seems like he always gave them enough to go out on their own... and he always checked back in on them as family. You can tell from the production credits years later, and the way he looked out for Saafir when he was having health problems a while back. With Shock it seemed like it always came from such a pure place. His production credits are deep too. How many hip-hop artists can say they produced for Prince?!"

The title comes from the refrain, which is a sample of Steely Dan's 1977 hit "Peg": "I know I love you better." De La Soul also used the whistling from the Otis Redding song "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" on this track, along with much of the instrumentation from the 1969 song "Make This Young Lady Mine" by the Doo Wop group Mad Lads. #TheMoreYouKnow (rainbow)
