Swedish sister duo First Aid Kit released "Who By Fire: A Live Tribute to Leonard Cohen" on March 26th, 2021. The 20-track recording was performed across two nights at the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm in March of 2017 as a theatrical staging of Leonard Cohen’s songs, poems, and letters. The duo said in a statement: “We recently listened back to this concert and realized that this was something out of the ordinary for us. It was a challenge to create a performance that wasn’t centered around First Aid Kit songs. It was something we’d never done before, but everything came together so well. Dwelling deeply into Cohen’s world was a pleasure, he was so prolific as both a poet and a songwriter, and everything he ever put out held a very strong standard. He cared immensely for his work."

Villagers (aka Irish musician Conor O’Brien) has announced a new album, Fever Dreams, which will be out on August 20 via Domino. A resident of Topanga Canyon for many years, Tim Booth wrote the lyrics of "Beautiful Beaches" in response to climate change migrations and the subsequent increasingly regular Californian fires bringing devastation to his community. It was inspired by a friend who lost his 'fire proof' home and had to flee for his life to the beaches and a recurring vision Tim had last year of earthquakes and fires in California - a vision which resulted in his family packing up and leaving the Canyon. 'That life we left behind, we're racing down to those beautiful beaches'. bit.ly

The end of that live version of Daughter just flattens me. I have sung the "It's ok" refrain to myself - and my dogs - several times in the past few weeks, including while waiting in line for my shot last Sunday. Sitting alone in my car, isolated, and extremely anxious, I heard those words and powered through. It's not just the big things, it's all the little things that add up too. I appreciate you and the KEXP crew. Hands All Over by Soundgarden radicalized me for the environment so seems like a good day to request it. Richard ================== This is an environmental song written by guitarist Kim Thayil (music) and lead singer Chris Cornell (lyric). It's about the abuse of mother nature (blanketing the ocean with oil, the clear cutting of old growth forests). Then the lyrics go on to say, "Put your hands away, your gonna kill your mother," meaning the Earth. --- www.youtube.com

Bachelor is friends Jay Som (Melina Duterte) and Palehound (Ellen Kempner). -- In a statement regarding this song, Kempner explained: “I wrote the lyrics to ‘Stay In the Car’ back in December of 2019 when I was in Florida for my partner’s top surgery. I had run out one afternoon, post op, while he was healing to grab lunch for us and as I was gathering my stuff in the parking lot, a big car pulled up and this absolutely beautiful woman got out. “She was yelling at the man behind the wheel asking him what he wanted from the store and I wished I was that man. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song number 161 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It noted: Originally a rootsy Dylan hommage, the song evolved into a proto-punk classic steeped in New York grit. The Velvets mixed R&B rhythm-guitar workout, blues-piano stomp and dreamy art drone, as Reed deadpans a story about scoring $26 worth of heroin in Harlem. "Everything about that song holds true," said Reed, "except the price." en.wikipedia.org

"Hit" is Björk's attempt to write a love song, but her vision of love is not what you typically find in love songs. Speaking with Melody Maker in 1992, she said: "I tried. I really did. But with a sense of humour. I wanted it to be gross and powerful. Because it's contrary to what people think of when they fall in love."

pronoun aka Alyse Vellturo shares regarding the track: “’I WANNA DIE BUT I CAN’T (CUZ I GOTTA KEEP LIVING)’ is about the uncomfortable feeling that everyone around you is growing into their own lives while I feel like nothing’s changing within myself. It’s the uncomfortable feeling of not wanting to be on this planet but knowing I really have to put in effort and figure out how to make life work for me. It’s about the uncomfortable but at the same time comforting feeling that others feel the same. It’s literally a hard look in the mirror, by myself, in a bathroom, asking myself what the hell is up. I’m talking to myself throughout the entire thing, but these days who isn’t.” musicpronoun.bandcamp.com

After getting hit with a great deal of negative publicity back home in London, The Sex Pistols felt like they had been trapped in a prison camp environment, so they decamped to the Channel Island of Jersey. The group was so notorious, they couldn't find a place to stay. Steve Jones and Paul Cook returned to England, but John Lydon and Sid Vicious continued on to Berlin, where they spent two weeks. The lyric was inspired by this trip, including their views over the Berlin Wall into communist East Berlin.
