Arlo Parks said of "Hope": “The song surrounds isolation, being present in your pain and knowing that you’re not the only one on the planet feeling low. “It’s a journey through the city to meet someone, seeing all the good, bad and ugly of the city—the manipulative advertising, the needles on the floor, police sirens, a queue hoping to find love in a nightclub and so on,” says singer James McGregor. “All of this stuff makes the city what it is, and makes life what it is. That’s the reality underpinning the ideal, and that’s what feels real.” - bit.ly

Good morning friends. Today is both my wife, Leah, and my son Mayan's (pronounced like Aztecs “Mayan) birthday. What a lucky, lucky day for me. 🙂 They both love the show and they both love some Stevie Wonder. Mayan is 12 and has been diving into Daft Punk with his new dj board. If you play them a tune, while we sit down to some vegan cinnamon rolls, that would be cool. Hope you all have a great day! -Armando

For Sean from Columbus, OH. -- The song originated with a lyric inspired by a line in Kurt Vonnegut's 1963 satirical postmodern novel, Cat's Cradle. "Who were you to ask for anything more? Do you wait for your dancing lessons to be sent from God?" Roswell explained: "I had written the line 'Peculiar travel suggestions are dancing lessons from God' in my notes. But then I thought: 'Uh, your peculiar travel suggestion isn't a dancing lesson from God, it's just a travel suggestion! Why does everything need to mean something more.'" - bit.ly

John, Glad you’re on the air this morning, the last morning I’ll have mostly free to listen to your show for a few months. Tomorrow is the start of our hybrid learning at school, so it’s back to half days with half a class in my room until the end of the year. I still hope to listen before the school day starts, but I’m definitely going to miss being able to catch longer portions of your show. They’ve definitely been helping keep me going through all of the challenges the past year has show us. If you’ve got time to fit a request in at this late moment, I’d love to hear something from either Dry Cleaning or Michael Kiwanuka. I’m still not sure how this third new regime of teaching and learning in a year is really going to work, but that’s what we’ll get to figure out soon enough. For now, I’m going to do my best to enjoy KEXP streaming through my speakers and the sun shining through the window. Happy Wednesday to all the crew up there in Seattle today! Andy PDX

Hi John! Happy Transgender Day of Visibility! I'm so happy we have a POTUS who wants to uplift Trans folks 💗 I've been working on earning my MSW. Grad school is hard, during a pandemic extra. I'm doing my internship at Seattle VA. I learned that the VA is likely the largest provider of healthcare to transgender people in the world. And they don't cover gender-affirming surgery, which they should because it treats gender dysphoria which is linked to suicide. Suicide rates for trans and gender diverse Veterans is 20 times higher than overall VA population. So I formed a team to advocate for the VA to cover gender-affirming, medically necessary, life saving care. I started out this text wanting to praise POTUS for posting about Trans Day of Visibility. And being grateful to you for helping reduce stigma about mental health. It's all connected, through love. And I wanted to request a song... So could you please play something by Ezra Furman? My fav. Chris in Olympia
