“Introducing different voices throughout the song added a new dimension to telling the story,” says the band’s bassist Marc Perlman, who co-wrote the song with Louris. “We approached it much like we did the whole record — more collaboration in the writing and more sharing of lead vocals than in the past.” Find this previous KEXP song of the day here: www.kexp.org

Heather: Hearing ghost riders in the sky is making me cry. My dad insisted it be the song in our father/daughter dance in my wedding. He passed away last month and at his funeral the song was played by a woman who plays a harp. == This was written and originally recorded by Stan Jones in 1948. Jones was a forest ranger who wrote songs on the side. After recording his version of the song, artists like Burl Ives, Bing Crosby, Gene Autry and Johnny Cash all recorded it, and the song became a cowboy standard.

The making of Wildflowers is the subject of the documentary Tom Petty: Somewhere You Feel Free, the Centerpiece selection of the 2021 SXSW Film Festival. Director Mary Wharton says the album came about during a pivotal moment in Petty’s life. “He was about 40 at that time and he was kind of realizing that there were things about his life that weren’t working for him anymore,” Wharton said during an appearance in the Deadline SXSW Virtual Studio. “Three main pieces of his life were his marriage, his relationship with his band and his relationship with his label and he just busted them all apart in order to kind of put his life back together in the way that it would work better for him, in a way that would make him happy.” deadline.com

Quesada, who produced the track, said in a statement: “I think this is one of the most thoughtful records I have ever done. We wanted to show the original ‘Strangers’ its due respect. We really tried to honor the song and its timeless lyrics. The Lucius vocals gave the song another dimension, and I only wish we could have recorded with them in person.”

The lyrics make a call for unity and world peace, mentioning England, Russia, China, Egypt, Israel, and Africa. "Love Train was the first of our big message songs," O'Jays singer Walter Williams told The Guardian. 1972 was explosive – Vietnam was rumbling on, the rich were getting richer - so it was the perfect time to sing about social issues. The song mentioned places that were having human rights problems, but in a positive, hopeful way: "The first stop we make will be England... tell all the folks in Russia and China too."

As a former CTA - Chicago Transit Authority bus driver I can tell you that working in Public transit is a trip. I had a summer job during college in Chicago driving buses through all neighborhoods of the city. During my training program the instructor told my class that opening the door of your bus is like opening pandora's box. For some people, the bus driver is the first person they interact with in the morning. There are definitely morning people and not so much morning people;) I was hit in the face by a raw egg buy a guy riding a bike Had my windshield broken by a rock Had lit fireworks thrown into the back of the bus through a window Had riders fight over opening windows Had guns waved at me while trying to merge lanes I was always moved by all of the hard working people who were so relieved to have the bus arrive at the corner so the could sit down after a long day working. Please play Mork and Mindy by the Sleaford Mods Eric From Chicago -------- Listen to Billy Nomates' story as told to KEXP's Owen Murphy for KEXP's Sound and Vision, hosted by Emily Fox. soundcloud.com
