Talking Heads released the single "Once In a Lifetime" as the first single from the Talking Heads’ fourth studio album Remain in Light on this day in 1981.
Angelique Kidjo transformed a dismal office into a free-form dance party in the video for her cover of the Talking Heads’ “Once in a Lifetime.” www.rollingstone.com
Duran Duran released their debut single "Planet Earth" on this day on 1981.
Scissor Sisters released their self-titled debut in the US on this day in 2004.
When performing the song live, Bowie would sometimes call out, “Oh, Rocket Man!”, possibly making a reference to his once good friend John. ‘Rocket Man’, was also produced by Gus Dudgeon (who produced ‘Space Oddity’ in ’69) in 1972. - bit.ly
The chorus of this essential Bowie track is loosely based on "Over the Rainbow" from the film The Wizard of Oz, alluding to the "Starman"'s extraterrestrial origins (over the rainbow). The octave leap on ("Star-man") is identical to that of Judy Garland's ("some-where") in "Over the Rainbow".

It's my birthday - last year at this time my husband and I were visiting New Orleans for the first time. It was a fantastical experience, with music of all types EVERYWHERE. It was the last trip we took pre-pandemic, and I have thought about the magic of it almost every day over the past year. While I'm eager to go back to a bar, crowded shoulder to shoulder, where you have to walk through the band to get in, in the meantime I'm remembering the positivity, happiness, and hope that music brings to us all. Could you play something New Orleans inspired this morning?

Today is our 20th wedding anniversary! I would love to request a song on behalf of my beloved and me.
The day we went into sheltering, we were quietly a bit excited at the thought of being home together more. It is a year later, and things generally suck, but we now can eat a relaxed early breakfast together every morning while the kids sleep and check in randomly all day.
Our marriage is our silver lining.
Happy Together by the Turtles and Solid as a Rock by Ashford and Simpson are favorites and Nick Cave's Into My Arms is our family song. We are okay with anything.

Costello on the moody origins of "Watching the Detectives": I was in my flat in the suburbs of London before I was a professional musician, and I'd been up for thirty-six hours. I was actually listening to another inductee's record, the Clash's first album. When I first put it on, I thought it was just terrible. Then I played it again and I liked it better. By the end, I stayed up all night listening to it on headphones, and I thought it was great. Then I wrote "Watching the Detectives".

This song was based on the '60s surfer/financial criminal Miklos "Miki" Dora. Damon McMahon (Amen Dunes) said, "Miki Dora was arguably the most gifted and innovative surfer of his generation and the foremost opponent of surfing’s commercialization. He was also a lifelong criminal and retrograde: a true embodiment of the distorted male psyche. He was a living contradiction; both a symbol of free-living and inspiration, and of the false heroics American culture has always celebrated. With lyrics of regret and redemption at the end of one’s youth, the song is about Dora, and myself, but ultimately it is a reflection on all manifestations of mythical heroic maleness and its illusions."

Pussy Riot released this new song “RAGE" on February 1st. It arrives days after three members of the Russian art collective were arrested following protests calling for the release of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

Just reaching out to say how much I love this song as it's on my Fuck Cancer playlist (the chemo regimen I was on back in 2008 made me very sensitive to cold -- drinking anything that wasn't heated up felt like I was swallowing glass, some hyperbole but you get it).
