RIP composer Harold Budd May 24, 1936 – December 8, 2020) who passed yesterday from complications due to Covid-19. He's known for collaborations with Brian Eno, Robin Guthrie and Guthrie's band Cocteau Twins and so much more. KEXP will honor his life all day today. -- Listener D. Rose writes: This is a HELL month for me each year. The images, the carols that bring others happiness have a different effect on me due to trauma history. When this song started, my whole body relaxed. At 1st I thought it was Moon & the Melodies. Then I looked; saw that Robin Guthrie & Harold Budd were on it. AH. THAT'S why it's so familiar. This is the kind of music that calms my nervous system & helps me to "unclutch" from triggers.

This was originally a commission for a Nestlé advert. Graham G Hastings of Young Fathers explained to NME: "We made them a song which says 'baby' 1000 times. All the lyrics are about 'Feed me, mama' and 'Food for the village.' We sent it to them and they said they'd loved it!" In the end, the commission fell through, but Young Fathers kept the song. - bit.ly

The Neverly Boys are a new duo made up of TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek and Swedish singer/songwriter Daniel Ledinsky, who has worked with artists as varied as Rihanna, Carly Rae Jepsen, and yes, TV on The Radio. The pair met while writing songs for what would become TV on The Radio’s 2014 album Seeds. Earlier this year, amidst covid-19, a troubling political landscape, racial inequities, they decided to release their debut, Dark Side of Everything. It was their hope that the album would add love and hope to a world in turmoil. KEXP’s Owen Murphy spoke to each via the internet from their respective homes in Los Angeles about their friendship, and how there’s light within the moody sound of the album. - soundcloud.com

"The songs on OPEN DOOR POLICY are about power, wealth, & mental health. They're about technology, occupation, consumerism, freedom, fandom and escape. And although the album was written and recorded in 2019, the themes of this record seem to be underscored and highlighted by this year of virus and quarantine." - theholdsteady.net

Hi John and team, I remember that walk to the new studio five years ago. I wasn't a consistent listener at that point, but I had the car (which was rare in 2015), and remember thinking, "Who are these Muppets?" during the walk from one studio to the other. On this day three years later, I gave birth to our son after seven years of infertility -- could not think of a better son for our sweet boy's second birthday than Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." Thanks for continuing to show up. Kristin

Hi There, I’m up in Calgary, Alberta, but our province/city just had to impose even tougher restrictions because our numbers are not looking great. Lots of isolation which means pretty limited Christmas activities. And we’re mainly in this mess because people are ignoring restrictions. A friend of a friend of mine was on the ski hill and met someone that had tested positive but “was getting bored during quarantine” so decided to go skiing. FML. It’s assclowns like that that have ruined the holidays. I’d really love everyone to do their bit so we can get through this mess sooner rather than later. Hoping you could play Give a Little Bit, some good ol’ Supertramp to ask people to give just that little bit to help out. Thanks, Mike

Today is my 32nd birthday. It’s only 9am and I’ve already gone through a whole spectrum of emotions. Happy and excited for a new year (it HAS to be better, right?!). This followed shortly by tears of exhaustion as I reflect on the year past, the burdens we’ve all experienced, and the added, often overwhelming stress of being a nurse during a pandemic. Its a lot of pressure and insanity... PLEASE play Under Pressure By David Bowie and Queen, nothing makes me dance and shout sing with more joy than this song. Thanks! - Teya

RIP to American minimalist composer, Harold Budd, who passed away recently. Off a collaborative studio album by Scottish dream pop band Cocteau Twins and Budd. The name "Cocteau Twins" did not appear on the release, which instead credited the band's three members (Elizabeth Fraser, Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymonde) and Budd individually.
