Chromatics cover of the Joy Division song that was released as New Order's debut single.
New Order keyboardist, Gillian Gilbert, makes an appearance on backing vocals in this early single from the band. She was in the punk band The Inadequates before joining New Order, and was inspired to become a musician after seeing Gaye Advert playing in the Adverts and watching Siouxsie and the Banshees on tv.
"Bantu Stephen Biki was a young South African leader who died in 1977 as a result of injuries received during interrogations by the South African Security Police. Appears on Siouxsie and the Banshees third album, 'Kaleidoscope.' It speaks of Dissociative Identity Disorder, which real-life Christine “Chris” Costner Sizemore suffered from. Her experience was later turned into the 1957 film “The Three Faces of Eve.”
First new track in five years from Brooklyn's Small Black. The band notes about this single: "Tampa’s about that trip you visualize in the future to keep the ship afloat in your present. The paradise you’ll reach where everything will fall into place. The thing is, when you actually arrive, you just end up staring at your phone, instead of racing with the dolphins. Your relationship problems are still there, actually amplified by the high stakes of “making the time count”. It’s that “wherever I go, there I am” dilemma."

This song pays tribute to English "punk poet," John Cooper Clarke. The band spoke to Apple Music about this one, "He’s just a proper punk, and one of the last remaining punks there is. Now Andrew Weatherall’s dead, and people like that have fallen, he’s still going. He just does it how he wants to do it, and I think that’s quite admirable, as a creative."

"I was listening to your show yesterday as you shared folks' stories about their troubles with car break ins and music thievery. Literally as I am listening to your show, I get a call that my car had just been broken into.
When I got to my car, my drivers window was smashed and the case for my Simon & Garfunkel Greatest Hits collection was broken apart on the passengers seat. Fortunately nothing major was stolen, and my S&G CDs were safe and sound in my CD player.

"I moved to Seattle a little over a year ago, and was happy to finally get KEXP on my dial. I had grown up in NYC and spent a good part of it exploring music and popping in and out of DIY venues. With KEXP I felt I had recaptured what I missed when I was in college.
The morning show has been especially important to me as I would listen on my way to work (or now at home), and the "you are not alone message" always felt nice, being that I moved to Seattle without knowing anyone. Especially moving and leaving everyone far away in LA or NYC.
I wanted to finally write in to thank you and KEXP for the cornerstone it provides in my new home. I think "Fake Empire" by The National would resonate with it's lyrics "we're half awake in a fake empire." Hopefully we are waking up.

"It's my dad's birthday today, he would have been 71 years old. I have listened to KEXP since 2003 when I moved to Seattle to do Americorps...this is my first time requesting a song, can you believe it?!
Every year since you started the Death and Music program and "mom show", I have thought I wanted to request a song for my dad. He filled our home with music and was always introducing us to artists both new and old. He communicated some of his deepest feelings to people by curating mixed tapes and CDs. He set the tone for all social gatherings with his music collection. It was a gift I took for granted in my early years more interested in some of the top 40s (cringe) than his Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Gillian Welch or John Prine records. I snapped out of it pretty quickly and began to try to share some of the new artists I was finding, usually thanks to KEXP. :) He was usually already familiar.
When he died of lung cancer in 2014, it was hard to play music for a while. It felt triggering and painful since it was so core to what he brought to our world, but I drew a lot of strength and healing listening to the stories shared and your mom's story. Celebrations and birthdays were a big deal in our home, we always felt life was too short not to celebrate, so I have continued to find ways to honor and celebrate him. This year, I'm hoping you could play "If you Ain't Got Love" by Mason Jennings. This was a song and album that really moved my dad, and it speaks to the love I hold for him, and I think we all need more of. Thanks for considering." - Jesse
The title for this fifth album from Scottish band Travis came from frontman Fran Healy while he and his partner were still deciding on what to name their son.
This one's for Morgan, Olja, and Susan! "Can you play anything by Michael Kiwanuka for Susan in Baltimore? She is a great friend that we, being in Seattle, haven’t seen in a long time and probably won’t see any time soon either.
Susan just emailed me and asked the name of that great radio station she heard back when she was able to visit us. I am thrilled to add another KEXP fan to the masses we’ve turned on over the past 15 years. We love you guys!"
