The Prince-penned tune made famous by the Irish singer Sinead O'Connor in 1990.
So Tonight That I Might See, the second studio album by Mazzy Star, was released in 1993.
Longtime Oasis drummer Alan White agreed to join the band only one week before recording began on (What’s the Story) Morning Glory, their second studio album from 1995.
This song from 1993 was written as a tribute to the Pixies (though Radiohead later said they missed the mark, and landing somewhere in early U2 territory)! Radiohead's Ed Obrien described this song as being “about people not standing up for their rights: Stop whispering and start shouting.” - bit.ly
Did you do something dangerously fun and outrageous in the ’90s that your parents didn’t like? You can probably thank Perry Farrell and Jane’s Addiction. - bit.ly

The Score is the second and final studio album by the hip hop trio Fugees, released in 1996.
Lauryn Hill described The Score as “an audio film. It’s like how radio was back in the 1940s. It tells a story, and there are cuts and breaks in the music. It’s almost like a hip-hop version of Tommy, like what The Who did for rock music.” - bit.ly
He Got Game is the soundtrack to Spike Lee's 1998 film of the same name and sixth studio album by American hip hop group Public Enemy, released in 1998.
The rap group not only sampled the original recording, but also brought Stephen Stills into the studio to play guitar and re-sing a chunk of Buffalo Springfield’s 1966 protest classic “For What It’s Worth.”
So excited for 90s day! High school and college nostalgia! My 3 year old was waving her hands in the air for “Flute Loop.” It’s a good day.
I remember one of my first concerts was Blind Melon opening for Lenny Kravitz. What?!?! Can you please play “No Rain”? Seems fitting for the Portland weather lately.
Thanks!
Christie
"If you can feel what I'm feeling then it's a musical masterpiece
Hear what I'm dealing with then that's cool at least..."
From the Beastie Boys' third studio album, released in 1992.
Request by Brian, who said:
The most underrated song from the 90s is: “I nearly Lost You” by Screaming Trees.
"I was buried deep in girl punk rock.
I have to go in for a follow-up mammography and ultrasound this morning bc something looks not-right in my breasts. And I would LOVE to hear some of my favorites from the 90s to help pump me up and make me act a little braver than I feel. Team Dresch? Bikini Kill? L7? The Gits?
Love y'all!"
"Rebel Girl" by Bikini Kill was released in three different recorded versions – on an EP, an LP, and a 7-inch single. The single version was produced by Joan Jett and features her on guitar and background vocals.

Bricks Are Heavy is the third studio album by L7, released in 1992.
"Pretend We're Dead" was written “in just a couple of minutes” by Donita Sparks following a painful relationship break-up. But she disguised the subject matter by tweaking the lyrics to address what she now calls “the apathy of the world”. - bit.ly

Dear John and Owen and team,
It’s 1990s music day! Never needed it more.
May I request Adorable’s “Homeboy” — going out to every single listener? I imagine us all singing at the top of our lungs “you’re so beautiful” to each other, across the globe. We are so beautiful. And we’re worth fighting for.
~Shannon (Northampton, MA, USA)
Pat writes, Thank you KEXP. I moved to Seattle in September 1990 for my freshmen year at UW. The city nurtured a love for music that started in high school. It wasn't just the huge bands either. Sweet Water, Black Happy and my favorite Lazy Susan to name a few were just as big a part of the scene for a lot of us. It's a pretty straight line from there to my support of KEXP. Today might not be my most productive at work but my soul will be full.

Inspiration for this 1991 song actually goes back to 1989 when Mike Edwards was listening to the Simple Minds' version of "Sign O' The Times," which they recorded on a 1989 EP titled The Amsterdam. The song, written and originally recorded by Prince, is his perspective of the troubling events of the late '80s.
While Edwards listened to the music, he watched the Berlin Wall coming down on television.
"I never thought that I'd see such a thing in my lifetime," he told The Guardian in 2018, "and I wanted to write a sort of updated but positive 'Sign O' The Times' to reflect what was happening." - bit.ly
This song being blasted while I boarded a ferry from Italy to Greece in the very early 90's... happy (goddamn) place!
Thank you for bringing back that feeling of sea breezes, amazing grooves, and feeling so so free!
-Anonymous
Great show! Thanks so much. This is bringing back so many memories, some good, some bad, some partial, some just a haze. But, would it have been the 90's at all without the very early 90's releases from Ned's Atomic Dustbin and Soup Dragons. Both helped kickoff my early twenties and inspired me to slough off the Northeast and move West.
Keep up the great work!

From the fourth studio album by LL Cool J, released in 1990. Though “Mama” is used in the album's title, it was actually LL's grandmother who gave him the directive to knock out his critics.
"Don't call it a comeback
I've been here for years..."

Requesting Liz Phair. I’m wearing my KEXP Bear in Space shirt today because it is Cubby Blue. I hope they win the World Series again this year not only because I’m a fan, but to close the Portal to Hell they obviously opened when they won in 2016.
