R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry once noted about this song, "Most fans may not realize that for two years before Murmur was released, we barely made financial ends meet by playing tiny clubs around the southeast. Our gasoline budget prevented us from venturing further. Put simply, our existence was impoverished. College radio and major city club scenes embraced this song and expanded our audience to the extent that we moved from small clubs to medium-sized venues and the additional revenue made it possible to logically pursue this wild musical endeavor. I dare not contemplate what our fate would have been had this song not appeared when it did.”

Sylan Esso's Amelia Meath to NPR about this one, "Most of the song is spent accusing myself of trying to become a successful musician when there are so many other important things to be doing other than sucking up to the man, trying to get America to think you are cool. Also — getting on mainstream radio is like trying to join a secret society, particularly if you are female. Stations have literally come back to us saying that they already have ‘a female vocal’ in their playlist."

Pauline Black to The Guardian in 2015: "The song’s in a weird 7/4 time – most hits are 4/4 – because we just didn’t know the rules. The chorus (“It’s just the same old show”) is a criticism of radio, but that didn’t stop DJs playing it. They didn’t bother listening to the lyrics."

According to Doug Yule, this song came out of a conversation between Reed and Velvet Underground manager Stephen Sesnick: "Steve was there going on about "how we needed airplay", and Lou said "I have this song 'Satellite of Love', and he mentioned the satellite that had just gone up which was a big deal in the news at the time, cause the space race was happening, and Steve Sesnick said 'Yeah, yeah – that'll do it!'"
