Our friends John and Julia in New Jersey made us aware of this recording. Its members of the Silverlake Conservatory of Music's Youth and Master Youth Chorale (over 50 kids!). They received the music for David Bowie's "Space Oddity" on a Friday, and recorded it on their phones on the following Monday. This was quite a challenge for these kids who normally rely on listening to each other, breathing together, following their director, and feeling confident with all of the musical choices that choirs usually make together. The Southern California conservatory has a unique history. It was founded in 2001 by Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist Michael “Flea” Balzary and touring band member Keith “Tree” Barry.
Be kind to one another
Tell her you love her every day
If you're angry about something, let it go
If the kids are frightened, tell them not to be afraid
But don't let them touch your face
Don't let them touch your face

Frightened Rabbit request for Blair this morning
During a bout of COVID-19 boredom, Noel Gallagher started going through a bunch of CDs he had lying around: “As fate would have it I have stumbled across an old demo which I thought had been lost forever. As far as I’m aware there is only one version of this tune ‘out there’ from an Oasis soundcheck in Hong Kong about 15 years ago? I’m not sure whether the soundcheck version pre dates the demo as there’s no date on the CD. I know some of you love this tune so we thought we’d put it ‘out there’ for you to enjoy/argue over.”
"I have a lot of heroes in my life...one of them is my brother Jason. He is my greatest friend.
We got to see U2 during 360 tour together in Las Vegas. Please play “light my way” for Jason , for you and for all of us so we know our efforts to light the way for so many is appreciated!" - Noel
Dave requesting this one from Temple of the Dog today
"Loving the show so far. It’s 2:40 PM in England at the moment. The great tunes are definitely helping me get my uni work done from home. Would love to hear anything Radiohead!" - You got it, Dylan!

"It's my wife Shauna's 37th birthday today. She is my rock in life. I couldn't imagine being in quarantine with anyone else! During this quarantine we have bonded at a whole new level and your messages on KEXP have been a massive part of our well being. Thanks to you and your team and all other listeners. Can you play Valerie June- somebody to love?" - Brian
"Despite the fact that the days run together, Friday still feels special. So, I'm going to embrace that.
Could you play People I've Been Sad by Christine and the Queens? She's one of a million artists that I would never have discovered without KEXP.
Thank you for what you do." - Christine

"I wanted to add my voice to the chorus of thanks, you and KEXP are a bastion of sanity in this crazy world! I am a shelter worker at a low barrier respite in Toronto that services some of the most vulnerable in society. We have just recently had our first confirmed positive test for the Covid-19 virus and it has thrown us all – guests and staff alike – into a maelstrom of anxiety and fear. People are understandably afraid to come to work. The most troubling aspect of this pandemic is the way it dehumanizes, I see it every day, most days on my way to work the only people I encounter are the homeless whose already precarious lives are now even more chaotic…I just wanted to hear something to lift spirits and maybe reflect the uncertainty we are feeling at work, so I would ask that you play Should I Stay or Should I Go by The only band that matters. For the record, I will be going to work. Take care of yourself and keep doing what you do!" - Thank you for what YOU do, Manny
"Hello, my name is Raluca and I'm listening to your station from Romania. We are also in isolation due to the pandemic, but I work in the medical field, so I don't get to stay at home. But when I come home from the hospital, I love to unwind by listening to music. And you put on really amazing music! I discovered some great bands by listening to the station or the live sessions that you have put on Youtube. And also, I get to listen to some of my all time favourite music.
If it's possible, can you play something from The war on drugs? I love their music!" - We sure can, Raluca, thank you for the work you're doing out there!

"It's my daughter Ella's 7th birthday today, and she would love to hear Around the World by Daft Punk, if you can fit it in." - We sure can, Laura! Happy birthday Ella!
"Just listening while I’m working out in my garage in Denver. How about some early 90's hip hop?" - You got it, Raj!

Read our tribute to Tony Allen, the Afrobeat drummer who passed away yesterday at the age of 79, here: www.kexp.org
Pioneering Afrobeat drummer and Fela Kuti collaborator Tony Allen passed away yesterday. The news was confirmed by Rolling Stone, no cause of death has been officially announced. He was 79 years old. Allen was born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1940 and taught himself to play drums when he was 18 years old. Some of his earliest work was performing with Nigerian trumpeter Victor Olaiya and his band the Cool Cats, beginning on claves and eventually taking up the drum kit. Kuti approached Allen in 1964, offering him to audition for his highlife band that would eventually become Kuti’s famed Africa ‘70 band.
