Their latest song signals a welcome return to a “new normal” after what has been a tumultuous year and a half for the band: Drummer Joe Seaward sustained a fractured skull and broken leg, among other serious injuries, after being hit by a truck while cycling in Dublin on July 2, 2018. Seaward spent much of 2018 and 2019 in recovery, and the band played their first live set since the accident at a secret show in Oxford, England, last November.

As a parent, I don't want to raise my kids to not have hope for a future. And to me, the hope I get comes from the kids — from not only my kids, but the young people that I'm around so much in their 20s are amazing. Sharon Van Etten says "I wrote the song about a friend talking me through a panic attack. Moving to New York City and doing what I do, social anxiety is a really ridiculous kind of curse to have. But I met people along the way who deal with it — performers as well — and they are learning to deal with it daily and deal with it in different ways. "We Are Fine" is a duet with Beirut's Zach Condon, who has social anxiety, too.

Can’t Sleep” was written in the fall of 2017 while Jay Som's Melina Duterte was living at home with her parents between tours. “I think I had all my gear packed away somewhere that I couldn’t access, so I used instruments left over in my childhood room: a broken acoustic guitar, chopsticks on a snare drum, a bad hi hat, and my trumpet,” she said. “Everything was recorded through the laptop mic.
