Arcade Fire's Régine Chassagne's parents were of Haitian origin and emigrated from Haiti during the dictatorship of François Duvalier. In this track Chassagne sings "Mes cousins jamais nés hantent les nuits de Duvalier ("My unborn cousins haunt Duvalier's nights") in reference to the relatives who were killed during the Jérémie Vespers massacre in 1964.
"My whole life is this escape," the surfer Miki Dora once said, "my whole life is this wave I drop into... set the whole thing up.... pull up into and shoot into my life, going for broke, man. And behind me, all the s*** goes over my back, the screaming parents, screaming teachers, police, priests, politicians, kneeboarders, wind surfers, they're all going over the falls, headfirst into the reef."
Savages frontwoman Jehnny Beth goes solo. David Bowie’s final album reminded her albums outlive artists, so she worked on her new LP “as if I was going to die.” www.jehnnybeth.com

Bonny Light Horseman formed when Fruit Bats singer Eric D. Johnson heard his friends Josh Kaufman and Anaïs Mitchell were getting together to revisit ancient folk songs. “This record is about timeless humanity,” Johnson says. “These 500-year-old lyrics are so deeply applicable. ‘The Roving’ could be the plot of an ’80s teen movie: ‘I had a wild summer with this awesome girl then she broke my heart!’" www.bonnylighthorseman.com
Big Thief will be touring all over the world this year, and though they don't have any Seattle dates right now, they are playing a bunch of west coast dates. Check out the schedule at bigthief.net
I Break Horses' Maria Lindén says: "The song, which was written in connection to a close friend's suicide attempt, also reflects upon the increasing reports that suicide is the second leading cause of death among Generation Z, with this age group having more mental health issues than any other generation." www.ibreakhorses.se
"Then She Did" chronicles Perry Farrell's mother's suicide when he was four years old. "It's probably one of the reasons we were brought together…" said Dave Navarro, whose mother was murdered when he was a teenager. "I have memories of us being onstage together and, before we played 'Then She Did', Perry would grab me and say, 'Let's do this for our moms.'"
Speaking of the meaning behind the song in a statement, Leithauser says it
s "about a friend who tends to run from his problems. When the going gets tough, he tends to just cut and run... The song is about the specific moment when the lights are coming up in a movie theatre where he’s been hiding out all day, and life’s complications are just coming back into focus." www.hamiltonleithauser.com
According to Wikipedia, this song has been covered by approximately 923437 other
bands.
Lafarge says the song is about someone who's "looking back over all the years that have passed, and feeling all of his mistakes turned into haunting memories—memories of missed opportunities, and all the friends and acquaintances that have become so distant over the years. He has a flood or a confluence of emotions, feeling like everyone and everything has seemingly slipped through his fingers. He’s overwhelmed, but he knows there’s only one thing for a singer to do: get back up on stage and “let the spotlight shine the skin off my bones.”" www.pokeylafarge.net
Sufjan Stevens has said "I've had quite a few exceptional and traumatic experiences in Illinois, a few times when visiting Chicago at a particularly difficult time in my life or driving cross country and being pulled over by the cops just outside Peoria." Stevens also cited the poem "Chicago" by Carl Sandburg as an influence on the track. music.sufjan.com

Released back in 1997 ... three hundred years ago today. "Song 2" was intended to be a joke on the record company. A slower, acoustic demo of the song was recorded featuring the distinctive "woo-hoo" chorus in whistle form. They then sped it up and performed it very loudly, with a deliberately amateurish guitar sound. From there, the band told the record company that they wanted to release the song as a single to "blow the ... labels' heads off". To their surprise, record executives reacted positively. 🤔
Written for Mavis Staples by Ben Harper! She says "I've stretched out - I'm singing songs that rock stars have written for me... But they know me and the kind of songs I want to sing." Speaking of rock stars ... Staples will be performing at the Gorge with Dave Matthews Band September 6th. mavisstaples.com

Playing the Showbox March 18th. Patterson Hood says "It really bothered me in the writing process of this record, the extent that it was dark. By nature, I try not to really be that way. As a parent, I don't want to raise my kids to not have hope for a future. And to me, the hope I get comes from the kids — from not only my kids, but the young people that I'm around so much in their 20s are amazing. So that's the biggest ray of hope I get... that ties in with the album cover, which has the two little boys standing on the beach watching the sunset. I'd like to think that somehow that is the ray of hope at the end. www.drivebytruckers.com

Great new track from the Australian shoegaze group. “Big Mess was one of the first tracks written for this record after finishing our last set of major touring. It became somewhat of a representation of what it was like at the time for us being away and coming home. Everything was a bit crazy and a bit messy in our lives…relationships change (all different kinds) as life changes and that is kind of what the song is about,” the band said. flyyingcolours.bandcamp.com
