Alaska in Winter consists of front man Brandon Bethancourt, who reportedly, "spent a semester in a tiny cabin out in the middle of nowhere Alaska recording music on a laptop during the winter", and which later came to be known as the project, "Alaska in Winter". Bethancourt later went to New Mexico and enlisted the help of fellow musicians, Zach Condon (Beirut), Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw), Hari Ziznewski (Rap), Stefanie Lamm, Rosina Roibal, Hilary Bethancourt, and Naila Dixon to help with his later musical compositions.
Multimedia artist Brody Condon directed the intense “When I Die” video.
“After the psychosomatic session that inspired the [cover art for Beirut’s recently issued LP, Gallipoli], I ran another session with Zach to guide a new video for ‘When I Die,'” Brody Condon said in a statement. “Something was missing. Later I learned the song was loosely about a fictional suicide cult, so I facilitated a group encounter with the band before their show in Berlin. I was surprised by their willingness to test each other’s boundaries, and spontaneously embody elements of Zach’s inner zone. They told me these intimate processes didn’t feel so differently from what they already do on stage.”

Before she wrote Silver Tongue, Torres' Mackenzie Scott stopped writing music altogether. She found herself "emotionally overloaded" — drained by the global political scene, romantic heartache and a family health scare. And in April of 2018, she was dropped by 4AD. On Twitter, she said the label dropped her for "not being commercially successful enough."
"I wish them all the best," she said in a tweet. "Also, fuck the music industry."

Producer Tchad Blake's spirit of maverick experimentation, included sticking a binaural head-shaped microphone in front of Yuval Gabay's drumkit, sticking a mic in a car muffler, called "the Bone" and sticking that in the drum booth as well, and having Doughty improvise wild, yelling ad-libs, and singing into a cheap amplification system called an Ahuja that Blake bought in India. The speaker was essentially a huge bullhorn atop a stick.

Polica's Channy Leaneagh explains how an accident breathed life back into her band.
On the new album you can literally hear her gasping for air. That’s because parts of the album were recorded while she was wearing a brace.
Two winters ago while she was installing pantyhose filled with sodium chloride to stop ice dams forming around the rim of her roof she slipped and fell 10 feet to the ground below. “I’d been doing it quite a bit, but on this particular day my feet slipped. I compressed my L1 [vertebra] and I couldn’t walk -- I had to crawl through my backyard and into my house to call for help.” She then spent the next few months in stasis, unable to work, clean, or even take care of her two children.

It came together very quickly and was one of those tracks that is a lot fun to make. As soon as I landed on the main synthesizer chords and the repeated refrain the rest came together very quickly and naturally. I felt like it was my job to get out of the way and not over complicate or over think it. Sometimes the best pleasures are the simple ones.”

When I arrived, it turned out that everyone I met in school had an old guitar with them that they had no idea how to play either, so we learned together. I was pretty awful through college, but did get my first taste of the open mic one night my senior year when I decided to do a clever cover of a song from a Broadway musical."

Tears for Fears were followers of American psychologist Arthur Janov's school of Primal Therapy. This song was inspired by his primal therapy treatment, which worked by getting people to confront their fears by shouting and screaming. The name of the group came from Janov's book Prisoners Of Pain.
