“Feeling lonely is one of the most common human feelings, right?” the band said in a release. “Well, being a musician doesn’t really help. Your whole life is constantly moving and the only thing that remains is yourself. And dealing with yourself. Oh gosh, we all know how boring and angering that can be. ‘Riding Solo’ is about this. About us. Perpetually on the move, being everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Surrounded by strangers most time of the day, being nines hours’ time difference from our people and what we call home, living and dying por y para la música.”

Mesa Luna is the Vancouver dream-pop, shoegaze project of Harlequin Gold/Blue J frontman, Justice McLellan. He comments, "If a photograph was taken with a slow shutter speed and you moved your body, there would be this Russian doll, ghostly effect created with your movement. I imagine trauma does something similar to someone's personality. The more uncomfortable, the farther the ghost you would occupy creating distance between yourself and the present. My personal goal making this record was to ground myself, see myself in focus and work past that oscillating mode by confronting certain aspects of my childhood."

“‘You Were In Love’ is a song about what heartbreak can do to a city—how it can leave bruises on the map, almost, turning the streets that once played host to the first flushes of infatuation into no-go zones,” says Kharas. “It’s a song about romance disappearing from a life and being absorbed into the night air and brickwork.”

My #7 album of 2019! Jarina’s childhood and family inform her genre-defying sound and politics. She was born in the Dominican Republic and spent her early years traveling in remote parts of the Amazonian rainforest and Dominican countryside, cataloguing indigenous sounds and rhythms with her parents, both renowned musicologists and musicians. As part of the resistance against the brutal dictatorship of Joaquín Balaguer, her parents performed a protest song in front of a large public gathering and had to immediately flee the country and were forced into exile where they relocated to Montreal until it was safe to return home.

Such strange ways to show who we are, what you know
Put the life back in your heart
Let's try forgiveness no self-deception
Little less reaction, little more reflection
I'm a lady
Got my mind made up
