Joni Haastrup is known as Soul Brother Number One in Nigeria. He earned the tag in 1966, after singing in one of the formative Afro-Beat albums — Orlando Julius Ekemode and his Modern Aces' Super Afro Soul. Later, in 1971, Haastrup got an unexpected break. Ginger Baker, the former drummer with Cream, invited him to join his band on tour. That gave Haastrup a taste for the big time and soon he was back in Nigeria to form his own band, MonoMono. The band's debut album was called "Give The Beggar a Chance." [pri.org]

Takudzwa Victoria Rosa "Tkay" Maidza is a Zimbabwean-born Australian singer-songwriter and rapper.
Her cover of this Pixies track was released as part of a compilation record titled Bills & Aches & Blues, a release featuring covers of 4AD artists covering other 4AD artists. 4ad.com
This 1984 album was the band's most successful, hitting #3 in the UK and #10 in the US. The band expressed discomfort at the ensuing pressure to continue this commercial success, as Alannah Currie told David Oriard of the Spokane Spokesman-Review:
'The biggest trouble that we've had basically is that the song, "Hold Me Now" was a huge hit, it was really big here, it was really big all over the world. Which is great, but it was just an accidental thing. It was just a song that we wrote. But after that then, we got everybody—managers, the record company—on our back to write "Hold Me Now, Part 2" and harassing you to try and find a formula. But we can't really. We'll never find a formula for what we did. And that upsets some of them.'

The soundtrack for Jeymes Samuel's The Harder They Fall is full of original songs written and recorded specially for the film including the one and only SEAL! Also featured: Koffee, Kid Cudi + JAY-Z, Fatoumatta Diawara + Lauryn Hill
Lead singer Nina Persson penned the lyrics for this song while sitting in an airport waiting for a plane when she was inspired to write the song and thought it would have a "slow bossa nova feel." She told STIM (The Swedish Performing Rights Society): "I do find that the biggest hits are the ones that are the easiest to write."

Brisbane, Australia's Hatchie (aka Harriet Pilbeam) is covering the Jennifer Paige 1998 hit "Crush."
Speaking on the cover, Hatchie explains: “I’d been thinking of covering “Crush” for a few years before this opportunity arose. I always thought the lyrics were much more moody than the bright chorus they were paired with, so I wanted to shift the focus. I was super keen to be involved with SC25 when asked. It’s cool to be amongst some great artists doing the same.”

Metronomy, aka Joe Mount, have a new album on the way called Small World. Mount says "I’ve been remembering what it was like as a kid when I’d be sitting in the backseat of my parents’ car and they’d be playing their music and I’d think ‘this is awful,’ but there’d be one or two songs I would like,” he adds. “I thought it would be fun to make that kind of album, and this is the song the kids might like. This is the ‘cool’ song.”
The album was ranked as the 5th-best album of 2008 by Time, the 56th-best album of the decade by Rolling Stone and 51st on Pitchfork's list of the Top 200 Albums of the 2000s.

Steve Lacy was born in Compton, California.His mother, Valerie, is African-American and his father was Filipino. Lacy’s only in his 20s, but he’s put together an accomplished resume as a member of the Internet and a contributor to tracks by Kendrick Lamar, Vampire Weekend, Blood Orange, Mac Miller, and Solange. Steve first got his start producing by making beats on his iPhone. His sound is a playful, beachy mix of funk and rock'n'roll, hinting at classic Southern California albums.

Here’s what Ibibio Sound Machine’s Eno Williams had to say about “Electricity”: Even in trying times, “without love, there’s no electricity.” This one started out as an idea to mix Afrobeat with Giorgio Moroder–style synth vibes. The end section with Alfred’s korego (Ghanaian 2-stringed folk guitar) solo was already there when we got into the studio, but then we added the big kick drum that happens underneath and Owen from Hot Chip’s crazy drum machine percussion at the end, which gave it a futuristic Afro feel when mixed with the more talking drum parts.
