This group has been pushing the boundaries of trip-hop and techno since they formed in 1988 (see KEXP doc on electronic innovators blog.kexp.org) and that doesn't stop here. Ritual Spirit is Massive Attack's first solo album since 2010's Heligoland, and hopefully a sign of more musical goodness to come.

Playing Mar 11 @ Neptune. An excerpt from our review of Big Black Coat: Junior Boys return with their first record in five years. Herein, Junior Boys have their most accessible record yet, albeit in sonic territory that exists far outside the present realm of trend. Playing @ Vera Project, Fri March 25. Our review of Porches' album, blog.kexp.org Pool marks a major step forward for Porches frontman Aaron Maine—as an evolving singer / songwriter, and as a nascent producer. Written and recorded almost entirely in his Manhattan apartment, Pool, is an elegant set of gorgeous synth-driven pop songs. The album is a fully immersive listening experience highlighting Maine’s insightfully filtered melancholy.

2008 debut album from the Electro outfit. Andrew Butler emerged from making music for college-based dance projects into a fully-fledged recording artist, via the New York art scene. This album is 2008's most exciting dancefloor concoction, an arthouse vision of Pure Pop by way of futuristic Electronica and classic Dance music, where beautiful, bruising harmonies and tensile rhythms collide in resurgent soundscapes and emotive Disco workouts.

This album is a culmination of Depeche Mode's middle-period experimentation. More informed by Goth than techno, it is still anchored by plenty of the larger-than-life-baritone melodrama so distinctive of David Gahan's vocals. Although nowhere near fast enough to be danceable, the commanding "Never Let Me Down" ranks as the best single on the album.

Playing Tues May 24 @ Neumos. It's with typical perversity that the Brian Jonestown Massacre makes the leap from the indie ghetto into the majors with their least immediate, most restrained record to date; given time to sink in, however, Strung Out in Heaven proves as engaging as their past efforts, with a focus and cohesiveness often lacking from their more visceral work.

Between 1968 and 1972, New Orleans-cum-L.A. session musician Mac Rebennack transformed himself into Dr. John, The Nite Tripper. Locked Down isn't quite swampy, but it is humid, even steamy. Its grooves are tight but raw and immediate. Its lyrics and music are charged with spiritual energy, carnal desire, and righteous indignation. It melds primal rock, careening R&B, and electric blues in an irresistible, downright nasty brew.

Sly & the Family Stone's debut album is more restrained and not nearly as funky or psychedelic as their subsequent efforts, owing far more to traditional soul arrangements. These aren't that traditional, though; Sly is already using goofier and/or more thoughtful lyrics than the soul norm, and taking some cues from rock in his adventurous and unexpected song construction.
