Rest well Carrie Fisher. You will always be our Princess.
DJ Shadow's pretty cool! From the Entroducing album, which was released on the Mo Wax label back in 1996. The 331/3 book on the album uses in-depth interviews with DJ Shadow to reconstruct his making of the LP.
Off the latest from The Radio Dept., which was released in late October. The album is titled Running out of Love, which sounds like the name of a Chromatics song.
Really cool Kraftwerk cover from Mr. Jurado & Richard Swift. Turns "Radioactivity" into a Saint Bartlett-era Jurado cut, which really works. From the Other People's Songs LP.
Some of El Perro Del Mar's earliest records came out on The Control Group, founded by Sonic Boom co-founder Nabil Ayers. The artist's latest LP, KOKORO, came out in 2016.
Oft mentioned in the End of Year roundups, which is good to see. Ms. Angel Olsen will be playing the Little Big Show on February 18th at The Neptune, supported by Sloucher.
One of those bands that you could swear sounds exactly like Grizzy Bear, and then you find out Daniel from Grizzly Bear is half the band. In Ear Park came out back in 2008.
Foxygen's first record in three years, following the sprawling And Star Power LP. Out in January on Jagjaguwar. Cool packaging, if ur into that.
Shawn Lee is currently working on the latest touring incarnation of the AM & Shawn Lee project, which he has released three albums with. This track came out in 2007.
Probably referencing Aphex Twin with the name, right? Part Aphex, part Star Wars, the combination of which sums up many 35-year-olds. From the Deadringer LP, which was released in 2002.
DFA put out a ton of cool records this year-- Factory Floor, Crooked Man, Essaie Pas, Shit Robot, Eric Copeland, Guerilla Toss. Label's on point. The new (!) LCD Soundsystem is slated for 2017?
Mr. Cohen from his final album, titled You Want It Darker. Just before his death, a great New Yorker profile was written about the poet: www.newyorker.com.
From a comeback record of sorts for Leonard Cohen, proceeded by the underrated Various Positions LP. I'm Your Man was No. 1 for 16 weeks in Norway. The great poet Frederico Garcia Lorca is credited as co-writing the track.
Bazan just performed a really gorgeous in-studio, covering Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," as well as several classic Xmas songs. It will be online soon. This track comes from Bazan's first of two albums this year, titled Blanco.
From the fourth Raveonettes record, In and Out of Control. A pretty accurate band name when you break it down-- raven + ettes implies 50s girl group + goth, which is virtually what you get.
From the on point full-length from Golden Gardens which came out in 2016, titled Reign. The local group also recently performed on Audioasis.
More local music from Goodbye Heart, who released the Keep Me Close album back at the beginning of December. It is the band's full-length debut.
Sometimes you've just gotta watch videos of Eno with long hair playing keyboards in Roxy Music. Love the Phil Manzanera guitar solo on this track, and on "I'll Come Running."
Still such a jam. The band that inspired every 14-year-old to wear black and read Nietzsche. Also, it was under-emphasized in their early press campaigns how cute they all are.
New record from Tim Showalter out on February 17th on Dead Oceans. Playing Neumos on March 17, which should be cool. He'll probably be really gracious, and have facial hair.
Robert Christgau gave Let It Be an A+, which is cool. To quote the dean directly: "Bands like this don't have roots, or principles either, they just have stuff they like."
Some major Public Image Ltd. vibes, but without all that John Lydon. One of Drag City's more undervalued 2016 releases. The sixth Purling Hiss full-length to date.
Lucy Dacus is playing Timbrr Winter Music Festival on Jan 27-28 in Leavenworth, along with Wimps, Thermals, Crater, Sloucher, DoNormaal, Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, and Tomo Nakayama.
Ms. Erykah has been busy as a collaborator in 2016, recording excellent tracks with D.R.A.M. and Robert Glasper. She was also on some Roy Ayers tracks a few years back, good stuff.
Another artist we lost in 2016. R.I.P. Alan Vega. I played "Frankie Teardrop" for friends at 2AM once, and it didn't really fit the vibe, but was still awesome.
Samples Ghost Rider by Suicide really well. M.I.A.'s Letterman performance of this track, featuring Martin Rev, is one of the best things I've ever gotten to watch: www.youtube.com.
One of the best examples of Prince's sex positive songwriting. According to his 90s website, Prince wrote the track in between three or four naps, which rendered him not fully conscious.
A pretty apt album name for Sleigh Bells's brand of 80s pop/metal stylings. Jessica Rabbit was the femme fatale in the classic Disney film Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, starring the late Bob Hoskins.
The debut record from musician Erin Fein came out back in early September on Polyvinyl. Killer album art. Was recorded over the course of four years between rural Illinois and Brooklyn.
Love and Rockets' commercial peak. Also has an amazing music video, featuring much Daniel Ash crooning in silhouette, which is even better than you'd imagine: www.youtube.com.
Going out in honor of the late, great Carrie Fisher. Who was also in what was arguably the greatest 30 Rock episode, "Rosemary's Baby." Little Chechnya will never look the same.
Okkervil River's Away features Marissa Nadler throughout on backup vocals, as well as a variety of classical musicians, and other non-rock personnel. Will Sheff has described approaching the LP as a solo album of sorts.
Kim put out a new record this year under the Body/Head moniker, which was pretty cool. Has more in common with Evol than Daydream Nation, if we're being honest.
Featuring Raquel Jones. Thievery Corporation will release a new record in 2017, entitled The Temple of I & I. It will be released on February 10th.
Still thinking about Andre's verse on the new Frank Ocean album. So good. He never ages. Also, Seven Benjamin started college this year, which is insane. www.youtube.com.
Dude York said they would put out a ton of singles in 2016, but just put out two (including "Black Jack"). Not to complain or anything, because all three tracks released are great songs, but I was bummed.
At what point did people start getting bummed out by Rivers Cuomo? Also, I watched the "Buddy Holly" video the other day, and it's still beyond delightful. Spike Jonze, what a man.
Lemmy died one year ago on this date. Apart from the founding of Hawkwind and Motohead, Lemmy was also regarded as a prominent collector of Nazi memorabilia, though he did not share the movement's beliefs.
What a man, what a man. The late, great Jay Reatard put out the Blood Visions LP back in 2006. Goner Records put out the excellent Angry Angles comp. this year, a band which Jay co-fronted.
One has to wonder how Patrick Stickles spent this past Christmas. Stickles & Titus released the massive, 29-track rock opera The Most Lamentable Tragedy in late 2015.
New Shins album maybe out in 2017. Definitely not featuring Jessica Dobson though? One can dream. Dead Alive, also known as Braindead, is a 1993 Peter Jackson horror comedy. It was his third feature and breakthrough.
New Run the Jewels is currently available for streaming. Killer Mike's television appearances throughout 2016 as a political pundit were marked in their eloquence and rationality, even while commenting on difficult issues.
Playing the Showbox on March 11th, which should be cool. From Trentemoller's 2016 LP, Fixion: trentemoller.bandcamp.com.
Some prime M83. From the same album which gave us "Car Chase Terror," which still haunts and confuses. Also a good video for this one: www.youtube.com.
The first single from Cherry Glazerr after signing to Secretly Canadian was awarded Best New Music by P4K. I'm a "Had Ten Dollaz" guy myself-- soundcloud.com.
Toronto band channels Pavement, does it really well, this sounds good. Check it out on Bandcamp, if you're tryna stream: casperskulls.bandcamp.com.
Kinks cover! This band met at a NY High School. Their press release describes their sound as "voyeuristic," which is a little silly, but we'll go with it. Good track.
