This was the result of lead singer David Byrne trying to write an Alice Cooper song, but it came out much more introspective. It ended up being about the thoughts of a murderer. Part of the chorus and the bridge are in French. The verse translates to "What I did, that evening, what she said, that evening fulfilling my hope I throw myself towards glory." The chorus lyric "Qu'est-ce que c'est?" means "What is this?" The "Fa Fa" part comes from an Otis Redding song called "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)." Redding and other soul singers were a big influence on Talking Heads.

Produced by American musician Todd Rundgren, "Skylarking" is a loose concept album centered around various cycles in life, such as the seasons, days, and years. The title was chosen as a double entendre, referring to a type of bird (skylark), as well as the British navy term "skylarking", which means "fooling around". "Skylarking" later became XTC's best-known album and is generally regarded as their finest work.

John Lydon said, “The 'Happy?' LP did have a doom, death and destruction feel about it, very crunchy, tanks rolling, very military in its approach.” “'Happy?' was much more militant in its approach, kind of pissed off at the world. That was the attitude...Bear in mind that 'Happy?' was the first album that we as a band had done, so we were sort of being very cagey with each other in the writing. Nobody really let rip.”
In 1987 Bono explained that everybody in the group knows what the line "And you give yourself away" means: "It's about how I feel in U2 at times - exposed. I'm not going to do many interviews this year. Because there's a cost to my personal life, and a cost to the group as well."
Frontman Michael Stipe references 19th-century poet Henry David Thoreau in the lyrics ("To throw Thoreau and rearrange"), completely by accident. He wrote: "My friend Chris told me that I was our generation's Whitman, I think because I was an ecstatic, and I liked men and women, and I was a poet in his eyes, even though I hated the word poet. Anyway I meant to write Whitman into the song, but I got mixed up and wrote Thoreau in instead."

Some of the lyrics are based on a poem by Hugh Mearns called "The Psychoed":
As I was going up the stair
...I met a man who was not there
....He wasn't there again today
....I wish that man would go away.
Elvis Costello wrote, "I’ve always told people that I wrote the song “Alison” after seeing a beautiful checkout girl at the local supermarket. She had a face for which a ship might have once been named. Scoundrels might once have fought mist-swathed duels to defend her honor.
Now she was punching in the prices on cans of beans at a cash register and looking as if all the hopes and dreams of her youth were draining away. All that were left would soon be squandered to a ruffian who told her convenient lies and trapped her still further." Read more about "unfaithful music": www.vulture.com
