Being No One, Going Nowhere finds Hodges contemplating his own personal identity, meditating largely on his place in the cosmos and the quiet struggle of individuality and personality.
Hodges explained the origins of this concept as “Kind of an eastern idea I read about. Not totally sure I understand it, but as far as I think I get it, it has to do with our commitment and attachment to our sense of self, like who we think we are. 'I am Josh Hodges of Portland, of that band, etc.' Just like all the stories we learn and tell ourselves about ourselves. That belief system can create a lot of suffering." Nike used this in commercials as part of their 1998 "I Can" campaign, showing everyday athletes practicing with determination. The Verve was dead set against using their songs in commercials, but they didn't control the publishing rights to this song: Allen Klein's ABKCO company did. When ABKCO authorized the song, it gave Nike the right to re-record it with other musicians, so The Verve agreed to let their original recording be used so that wouldn't happen.

Yup, she covered the ENTIRE album! In a press release, Frankie explained her approach to reimagining the 1980 LP, which she recorded with Jorge Elbrecht: “Since I already think it’s a perfect record, I tried not to reinterpret too much and stick to similar sounds as the original, but with a twist.”

The hook samples the line, "I've been downhearted baby, ever since the day we met" from a live performance of B.B. King singing "How Blue Can You Get?," which can be heard on his 1971 album Live in Cook County Jail. That song was written by a British songwriter/music journalist named Leonard Feather, along with his wife Jane. They each shared composer credits on "Phone Booth" as a result of the sample.

This song introduces us to Bowie's post-Ziggy Stardust persona, Halloween Jack: "The Halloween Jack is a real cool cat and he lives on top of Manhattan Chase." The crowd noise at the beginning of the album was sampled from studio tapes of Rod Stewart's early '70s band, The Faces. The tapes were of their live album, Coast To Coast/Overture And Beginners.
Parquet Courts have announced a new album, Wide Awake! It’s out May 18 via Rough Trade. Wide Awake! was written by Savage and Austin Brown, and produced by Danger Mouse. “I personally liked the fact that I was writing a record that indebted to punk and funk, and [Danger Mouse]’s a pop producer who’s made some very polished records,” Savage said in a press release. “I liked that it didn’t make sense.”

"Fu-Gee-La," released late in 1995, was the first single from their second album, The Score. At the time, Lauryn Hill was still taking classes at Columbia University; when their record company had her and her bandmates appear at a New York record store to sign copies of the single, she was shocked to see a line around the block. She was even more surprised to find out they were all there for the Fugees.
The album became one of the most successful of the decade, and a hip-hop landmark. The group toured the world and earned widespread acclaim, including a Grammy for Best Rap Album.
On May 7th, Unknown Mortal Orchestra will be playing The Moore.

Glade is the debut album from Umeå, Sweden garage rock act Spice Boys. Formed in late 2015 the band, made up of Adam Forsberg, Jesper Lindkivst, Emil Uppenberg and Sebastian Holmlund, first came together after Holmlund came up with the name and decided it was too good to not. The band quickly set to work on music and within a month they’d finished and recorded their debut EP Spice City, during a one night drunken session, which brought them the attention of the Stockholm based label PNKSLM Recordings.

For her tenth album and first album on a major label in nearly fifty years, legendary soul singer Bettye LaVette takes on the songs of Bob Dylan. It comes out on Verve Records March 30th and includes guest performances by Trombone Shorty and Keith Richards.
Neko Case has officially announced the forthcoming release of Hell-On via Anti- and shared the album's lead single and title track. The album was self-produced by Case with assistance on six of the tracks by Bjorn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John. The press release describes the album as "simultaneously her most accessible and most challenging album, in a rich and varied career that's offered plenty of both." Catch Neko Case at the Gorge for Sasquatch! Music Festival on Sunday, May 27.
