This was the second single from santigold (then Santogold) from her 2008 debut album, "Santogold."

The title stands for New York’s Lower East Side. “It’s not a French thing,” White stated in an interview. On MTV’s FNMTV, Santigold stated that the title literally meant Lower East Side Artists.
Darkness is one of the few Human League tracks to have the lyrics written by Adrian Wright only. Philip Oakey has said: "That's an Adrian lyric. It's as simple as being afraid of the dark. There's no extra level to it. It's 'scary things scare me'", adding "Jo Callis wrote the tune, and everything he does is musical. Some people have got that." bit.ly

Harvey recorded Stories From The City after spending months in New York in some kind of mad, euphoric relationship... To that point, Harvey had built a career by mining human darkness and obsession, making clangorous noise-rock and haunted blues. With Stories From The City, she went a different direction, making pretty and glamorous and cleaned-up modern rock music that pulled people in rather than pushing them away."
However, "The New York of Stories From The City isn’t exactly a glamorous playground, and 'Big Exit,' the album’s first song, is all about the grinding stress of trying to find a place in a violent, gun-happy culture that is not your own."

Born on this day in 1939! HAPPY 85th BIRTHDAY to the legend Mavis Staples!!
R&B singer and soul icon Betty Wright passed away on May 10, 2020 of cancer at the age of 66. Betty was famous for her use of whistle register on hits like "Clean Up Woman" and "Tonight Is the Night"; she's been featured in hit duets with artists from Peter Brown and Alice Cooper to Grayson Hugh and Tom Jones.

So I hopped in the car and drove across the island to the goose, an awesome little community grocery store. I was delighted to learn that KEXP comes in loud and clear in the car.
