Cocteau Twins was one of the most distinctive bands of the '80s, with a much imitated sound of blissful vocals and swooning, ethereal atmospherics. Head over Heels was their second studio album, released in 1983, and this song was later included on the Lullabies to Violaine compilation album (2005). cocteautwins.com

The original title of the song was "Wolf Lady", which makes reference to the lyrics in the second verse of the song. The lyrics of "Train" are based on Alison Goldfrapp's observations while in Los Angeles, California. She stated that the song describes wealth, drugs, and sex with "a sort of disgust of it and at the same time a sort of need to indulge in these things." A few years ago Goldfrapp curated a playlist for KEXP's Midnight In A Perfect World show. Check it out here. www.kexp.org

Gorillaz have shared "Silent Running," featuring longtime collaborator Adeleye Omotayo, from their upcoming album Cracker Island, out TOMORROW! "Silent Running" was the first Cracker Island song Gorillaz worked on with producer Greg Kurstin at his studio in Los Angeles. Musical mastermind Damon Albarn described the mid-tempo funk gem as having "that sort of mesmerizing dreamlike state you get in when you’re just following some train of thought." This is the fifth track the band have shared from Cracker Island, along with "Skinny Ape," "Baby Queen," "New Gold" (featuring Tame Impala and Bootie Brown), and "Cracker Island" (featuring Thundercat). L.A. artist Terrace Martin's new single featuring Channel Tres. Martin describes the song: "The song 'Chucks' is a sonic picture that represents New Los Angeles. The driving pulse of the song represents the tempo of traffic, the bass line is the attitude of a true Angeleno, the space that Channel commands with his vocals closely relates to the motion of water. At the end of the day it’s goin' to make you move and feel good about being alive." Read more at Stereogum: tinyurl.com

New single from Bully features Sophia Allison of Soccer Mommy! Bognanno says, "When ‘Lose You’ came about it was the first time I've considered having someone else sing on a Bully song. I love Sophie's voice and have always admired everything she does so to me it was a no brainer. Watching her soar out of the Nashville scene and dominate indie music world wide has been a joy. Writing ‘Lose You’ was a way for me to work through the pain and reality of impermanence. It doesn't make it any easier but reflection is often followed by growth and to me that's what life is all about." Keep your ears open for a new record expected to release later this year. NEW MUSIC!!! From the forthcoming debut solo release 'Wait Til I Get Over' from Durand Jones - dropping May 5! On the deeply personal album, Jones reflects on his relationship to his hometown of Hillaryville, LA, a town first established as a form of reparations to previously enslaved Black Americans. bit.ly “The interlude ends with my grandmother telling us how she felt about Hillaryville back in the day. Hillaryville is no longer a sanctuary town or ‘place you’d most want to live’. Most people in my generation and younger dream of escaping a place like Hillaryville. And for many, the dream never becomes something more. Life can find a way to keep you there if you will let it. I wanted to express this thought through sound in a raw, wild and raucous way. A build of a groove that feels like it is driving through a muddy swamp. Trapped.” Video! youtu.be

In the US, this was released as a single on August 31, 1968, just a few days after the Democratic National Convention, which took place August 26-29. The convention was marred by violence, as Chicago police clashed with protesters. When the song was released, every radio station in Chicago (and most in the rest of the country), refused to play it for fear that it would incite more violence. There was no official ban in America or Chicago, but stations knew it was in their best interest to shun the song, which accounts for its meager chart position of #48. Mick Jagger later said: "The radio stations that banned the song told me that 'Street Fighting Man' was subversive. 'Of course it's subversive,' we said. It's stupid to think you can start a revolution with a record. I wish you could!"

The song is built on a sample of a 1972 track called "Think (About It)" that was recorded by the soul singer Lyn Collins but written and produced by James Brown, the man responsible for a plurality of samples in hip-hop, especially in the '80s. Many other artists sampled "It Takes Two" but Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock figured out how to loop just the right elements of the song into an inescapable groove. Most importantly, they kept the "woo... yeah" vocal going throughout the track, which sounds like it would get really annoying but somehow doesn't.

"Disco music in the '70s was just a call to go wild and party and dance with no thought or conscience or regard for tomorrow."--Martha Reeves -- This song - considered a classic club hit - was performed by Andrea True. Born and raised in Nashville, True had moved to the Big Apple and achieved notoriety as a porn star. True was doing commercials for hire in Jamaica when a state of political upheaval broke out on the island. She was looking for a way to get herself and her money back home to the USA. She called upon her friend, producer Greg Diamond, to help her get a song demo together - a way of laundering her money off of the Caribbean island in the form of a master tape. Diamond reportedly wrote the now-classic song in one hour and produced the whole demo with the help of island musicians - horn section and all - for only $1,400.

In 1999, a group of doofy Canadian rap heads called Len sampled an Andrea True Connection disco hit and made a dizzy, shambling, glorious one-off called "Steal My Sunshine." The Man have enlisted the help of Cherry Glazerr frontwoman Clementine Creevy.
