DRIVE TIME! Troy Nelson is in for Kevin today until 7PM, and we're glad you're here. Thanks to Larry Mizell, Jr for another excellent Afternoon Show Hailing from New York City, New York, Diiv are an indie rock band that started out in 2011. Pitchfork's review of "Oshin": 'The experience of Oshin is aqueous and amorphous in a way that makes using the term "rock" feel uncomfortable. The pliable yet sturdy intertwining of guitar and bass stretches across the songs like a hammock.' -- tinyurl.com Kevin Cole hosted DIIV live in from CMJ Union in 2012: youtu.be

Black Marble are on tour now, with US dates in November, none in Seattle though. Chris Stewart formed Black Marble in 2012; Stewart writes and plays everything himself, and tours with a rotating cast of players. Emerging from the early 2000s New York synth scene, Black Marble carried on the tradition of early synthwave pioneers like Martin Dupont and Modern Art who repurposed synths once reserved for expensive studios and stadium rock superstars. Available widely and cheaply for the first time, these synths became a staple for bedroom artists – connecting wires and twisting knobs into something that felt entirely new. "When I started making songs I got enough positive feedback just to keep me going," Stewart says, "and then I never stopped." blackmarble.bandcamp.com

On recording this album, Jessie Ware shares, "I feel really confident about the new music I’m doing. I don’t feel like I’m trying to impress or please anybody, I’m just making the music I feel like making... This whole new record is about fantasy and escapism. It’s for the fans who have been there for a start. It was funny seeing the comments from fans like, ‘At last! You’ve given us a groove, Jessie!’ It’s a record people can dance to or have sex to, I hope... I’m proud of everything I’ve done, but I needed some energy. I can sing ballads till the cows come home, but I also can do dance music, and it’s where I came from, so I just wanted to dip my toe back in that." bit.ly

Dawn Richard describes her project as part of a movement to bring pioneering Black women in electronic music to the front: "You never see women appreciated as producers and artists alike, especially Black women in the electronic space. The time is now for us to start recognizing their talent, not only in electronic music but in all genres. I wanna be the reason why a young Black girl from the South can be whoever she wants to be musically, visually, and artistically." Colleen Green celebrated a birthday on Saturday, Oct 23! 'Burnt out on bad feelings and ready to have fun with melodies and beats, Green enlisted producer Gordon Raphael (The Strokes) to take her songs to higher ground while keeping her lo-fi aesthetic intact. Raphael was already a fan, having caught a show in L.A. and finding himself “struck by how confident and powerful she looked, even though she was the only one onstage.” He agreed to take the gig, and together with drummer Brendan Eder and hip hop producer Aqua over a few weeks in Los Angeles, 'Cool' was created.' colleengreen.bandcamp.com

"The Ghost Who Walks" is the debut album from British singer-songwriter Karen Elson. Elson said : "The title was a nickname that I had at school. It was one of the nicer nicknames I had for being tall, pale and a little bit haunted.' Charlotte Gainsbourg interviewed Karen Elson! Elson's first full-length album was written, for the most part, in secret without letting her (then) husband Jack White hear what she was doing. "At home I would hide—I would play my songs really in isolation. I would lock the bathroom door and hide. Eventually he was like, 'Why are you hiding this from me?'" bit.ly

After breakout album 'Saturn', the R&B star experienced lows and massive highs – from burnout to motherhood – and regrouped with 'And Then Life Was Beautiful'. “In 2014 to 2016, when I was writing the first album, electronic music was really popular. I really enjoyed electronic music as well. I was raving to it so, of course, it was going to be a part of what I was going to make. Then the sound shifted, and I went into a more soulful era, and I feel like I’m still there.” bit.ly -- Larry Rose hosted NAO Live in the KEXP studio in 2016. youtu.be -- www.thisnao.com

In a 2012 interview with British newspaper The Guardian on how "Back to Life" was made, producer Jazzie B said: "Everything about this single was magic. We weren't trying to follow any trend or fit into any category – we were just doing our own thing... Its shuffling beats were a cross between reggae and what was to become known as hip-hop: breakbeats and electronic sound. Caron Wheeler's vocal, coming over these very heavy bass beats, was the icing on the cake...We also had the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra on the track, and the RPO became a key part of our sound. We often look to America for our influences, but this was a moment that put British music back on the map. It also came out at a special time in the industry's history – just before digital took over and everything seemed to fall apart."
