James wrote this song after attending a Los Angeles rally the day after the tragic shootings at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. He said in a press release, “It’s a song about speaking out and trying to be there for people in spirit even if you can’t be at every rally and battle.”

This is the third album by Dev Hynes recording as Blood Orange. Freetown Sound takes its name from Freetown, Sierra Leone, where Hynes' father was born. The album features Carly Rae Jepsen, Zuri Marley, Debbie Harry, Nelly Furtado, writer Ta-Nehisi Coates, slam poet Ashlee Haze, and others.

Thanks for playing the Butthole Surfers. I was the sound engineer for their 2nd ever live performance (and many others afterward) at La Villita in the summer of 1981 in San Antonio TX. They opened for the band I was working for: Austin's jerryskids - formerly known as STB (Sharon Tate's Baby).

Dry Cleaning recorded this album during the pandemic, with each member demoing their individual parts on a four-track Tascam recorder they passed to each other through the window of a car, disinfected each time with antibacterial wipes. They went on to work with producer John Parish (PJ Harvey) at Rockfield Studios in Wales to put the record together.
